Hippeastrum is the household plant.

Per Wikipedia, there is a variety that lives outdoors known as the true Amaryllis. It is a southern African bulb. Depending on location, around October or November, the stores begin to carry what is referred to as Amaryllis bulbs in North America, however, they are actually Hippeastrum. They are typically in varying degrees of growth from bulb to bloom. If a particular color is desired, one has to rely on the description on the tag. The flowers come in many colors with the most popular being: White, pink, and red. These beautiful large-headed flowers take a little skill and planning if they are to bloom by the holidays.
