Simple Tips to Get the Most Out of Food
Many people think that eating certain foods is the only way to be smart about eating. While this is very important, the truth is that the way you eat can impact you just as much as what you eat. This is called eating smart.
The first thing you should know is that it is important to chew your food thoroughly. As children we are told to chew our food, but with time we learn to eat quickly and not enjoy the taste. More importantly the reason for adequate chewing is because digestion starts in the mouth. Of course we all know that chewing breaks down the food, but it also mixes with saliva that contains digestive enzymes.
Another thing that many of us may not think about when it comes to eating is not to eat when we are under stress. Our bodies don’t digest our food properly when under stress. During meal time avoid confrontations, arguments, working, watching TV (especially the news), and driving. If you are feeling stressed during a meal, take a deep breath and relax. It also helps to set the mood for relaxation if you light candles or turn on soothing music during your meal.
Stop eating when you are full. It takes a couple of minutes for your brain to tell you when you are full, so eat slowly, this will help you to not overeat.
Another important thing to do is make sure you are eating breakfast. Breakfast should be the largest meal of the day. Lunch should be a nice size meal and dinner be should be the smallest meal of the day.
Also eating six times a day will help keep your metabolism going and keep you from eating unhealthy snacks.
