FOOD PORN #10: Pain Perdu with Rainbow Fruits

in #food8 years ago

Bonjour from France lovely Steemies!

I know that some of you, like me, love to make and eat colourful food, so today's recipe is one to add to the rainbow collection!

This French classic, Pain Perdu ("lost bread") is a winning dessert, well worthy of being served up at elegant dinner parties, yet takes only minutes to make and requires no fancy cheffing skills!

Pain perdu is my 'go to' dessert when I fancy a pud after dinner but haven't thought ahead. It's super satisfying and tasty, as well as being so versatile when it comes to toppings. In the summer when strawberry season is in full swing, I like to load up the plate with them and a hearty scoop of vanilla ice cream. In winter some caramelised oranges work a treat with the sweet brioche.

Not a fruit fan? No problem! Drizzle over some melted chocolate and add a scoop of salted caramel ice cream and you've got yourself a plate from heaven!

Here's what you'll need (for 2 people):

2 slices brioche
1 egg
25g caster sugar
50ml milk
20g butter
A handful of fruit- I've used kiwi, mango and raspberries
To decorate, I've drizzled over some melted chocolate and swiped the plate with some warm raspberry jam.

1. Peel and chop your fruit and set it to one side.
2. Whisk together the egg and sugar and then gradually add the milk.
3. Pour the mixture into a tray and lay your brioche into it, coating each side.
4. Heat the butter in a frying pan until melted and then carefully place the brioche into the pan. Watch out, the bread gets soggy and breaks easily! Best to use a fish slice!
5. Fry over a medium heat until golden brown, and then turn over to cook the other side.
6. Place on to your plate and scatter your fruit on top.

For extra yumminess, add a scoop of your favourite ice cream, or a dollop of creme fraiche. The world is your brioche oyster!

I hope you've enjoyed today's recipe. See you soon Steemies! XXX
