Feeding the Family for the Cost of 1 Steem
In an effort to take a closer look at our meals and what we are spending on them I finally acquired myself a new set of scales
For the first meal I thought I would look at what I considered to be the cheapest meal I can cook for the whole family and see if I could even do it for 1 steem.
Corned Beef Stew is nice and simple, can be cooked in one pan and used to be a much cheaper meal although the price of corned beef has risen over the years, much more than other tinned food.
400g Mixed Veg (£0.95/kg) = £0.38
680g Corned Beef (£1.47/340g) = £2.94
1 OXO cube (£2.00/24) = £0.08
2kg Potatoes (£3.25/7.5kg) = £0.86
6g Gravy Granules (£2.99/550g) = £0.03
Total cost: £4.29
This meal actually made enough for 2 servings each, so the total cost of one meal for a family of 4 came in at: £2.15 (rounding up)
At the time of writing this 1 Steem was worth £2.65 so the whole meal was cheaper than 1 steem leaving enough change for adding bread if you wanted to.
From this I have also learnt the idea weight of potatoes for most meals, this is one of the things I am most guilty of going overboard with.

This is a clever concept!!!!
If we want to start using steem - we might as well start thinking in terms of steem! :) very cool
You should have posted a picture of the final product too :)
I want to be able to go through most of my meals in this way.
I would have added a photo but I couldn't get a decent shot. To hungry to set up all the photography stuff and the phones weren't capable in the evening light.
i totally understand. hunger waits for no one! hehehe (next time maybe! ) you can do a series on how to feed a family on X steem/week! :)
And I can add... it was bloody tasty!
