The sense and nonsense of natural food and cosmetics

in #food6 years ago

We only want the best for our bodies. Our food should be as natural as possible, no GMOs, or vague E-numbers or ready-made meals.

And also cosmetics can be better of olive oil or honey than in a plastic bottle with a series of unknown compounds on the label. But why.. ?

Natural and synthetic

It seems easy to explain everything that is 'chemical' to war and to embrace everything that is natural. It is not that easy. What is chemical at all? Nature does no different than making chemical connections. In fact, without chemical reactions you can not even breathe, digest food, or grow.

Where people talk about chemical substances or chemicals, in reality they are often synthetic compounds or naturally occurring elements that have an effect on our body. Synthetically produced chemicals can indeed be dangerous, but there are just as well synthetic compounds that are not harmful. There are also dangerous and harmless variants of natural substances.

In fact, when you artificially imitate a natural substance, your body will not notice any difference in action at all. Of course both synthetic and synthetic are both chemical and the one is not necessarily better than the other.

Enjoy in moderation
Ultimately, it is all about the concentrations of substances in our body. If it stays below certain limits, nothing is wrong. Only when your body can no longer manage to get rid of surpluses and react with our body's own substances will problems arise.

Some substances are already harmful at much lower concentrations than others. If I would consume huge amounts of broccoli and beer, I have a suspicion of which - by the way, all pure natural material - I would soon experience the consequences!

This concerns the substance that causes the reaction, but it has nothing to do with whether these substances are natural or synthetic.

'Of course' is a marketing term
If there is no point in distinguishing between natural and synthetic substances, why are there so many natural products?

With the convenience of the supermarkets, besides fruit, vegetables and grains, we have also started buying bulk ready-to-eat cookies, cereals, soups, complete meals and cosmetics. These factory products are made out of our view and we have no idea what it is for most ingredients.

Now that we are increasingly aware of how strange that is, we want control back. We want to eat and lubricate things that we know and these are not cryptic E-numbers, but pure, natural ingredients.

Although we are also starting to work with organic and local products ourselves - that we therefore eat more vegetables is of course pure profit -, we are of course rather lazy than tired.................... ?
