Why You Cry When Chopping An Onion.
Have u noticed very few people can comfortably chop an onion without experiencing discomfort of the eyes or in some cases ”crying.
Ever wondered why? Well, this is because they posses a chemical called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When slicing onion this chemical triggers the eyes lachrymal glands,which causes them to tear.
It might interest you that onion happens that the sulphur compounds it posses that causes the eye to tear are responsible for its unique taste when used as food seasoning. And its surprisingly the only vegetable that makes you cry; not all eyes react to it though but it affects mild eyes that cannot stand any form of gas unlike harsh eyes. That's why some people cry when chopping an onion and some don't.
Nevertheless, here are some ways you could try to prevent your eyes from tearing when chopping an onion.
. Cut with a sharp knife.
. Refrigerate before slicing or you can soak in cold water.
. Use a chopping board.
. Wear goggles.
