Even though I certainly didn't grow up where eating insects was common, I know that many cultures have relied upon them because they lacked other sources of protein.

It's interesting to note that many species of locusts are considered kosher by Orthodox Jews because in bible times, they had to eat something during times when locusts swarmed. Apparently, in those days, pickling was the preferred way to prepare locusts. :)
