Pundits verdit: Manchester United 1: 2 Sevilla
Ferdinand: ‘Terrible. I didn’t see this result or performance coming, they looked like a team thrown together full of strangers.
‘They went out there and played nervously and cautiously, you’ve got to take the game by the scruff of the neck. They gave nothing for the fans to cheer about.
‘Top teams don’t pick and choose when they play. They are consistently good.
‘There will be teams licking their lips to play Sevilla in the next round. They are a decent team but they don’t frighten you. Before the goals they didn’t look like they’d score for six months.’
Scholes: ‘That’s the way the manager likes to play, on the counter attack and using his pace. There was no desire, energy or speed about the team.
‘I can’t explain it, it’s unexplainable. If you go back to the first game, teams go to places to try and score goals in the modern game and United didn’t do that.’
Gerrard: ‘I don’t think you can say that about Jose (that his tactics are outdated). He’s more than capable at this level, a world class manager. His players haven’t turned up. Sanchez was poor, Rashford was poor, Lukaku was ok but if you want to progress you need your big players to perform. None of them turned up for Mourinho tonight.
‘United showed them far too much respect for the first half of the game. Bringing Martial and Mata on to change it, Mourinho did try things but then it’s over to the players to carry that out but they showed them far too much respect.’
