Premier league vs La Liga
Hello Soccer fans! The new European season has started and we already enjoying the action and fallout of matches across the continent. The premier league is the most followed football league in the world due to the huge support it enjoys from notable media organisations like BTSport, Sky, NBC, BBC and others. A whole lot of Africans are passionate about notable clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea while some millennials are equally supporting Manchester City. The Citizens are backed by an Abu-Dhabi based business group that took over the club in 2008.
Even though the Spanish primera liga has just commenced, the Spanish super cup has already turned out to be a huge talking point amongst soccer fans. From the sending off of Cristiano Ronaldo to the month long injury sustained by Luiz Suarez after a 5-1 aggregate loss in the hands of the 'Merenges'.
The UEFA Super cup was won by the reigning European club champions, Real Madrid. The Spanish side were very dominant in their easy 2-1 win over Manchester United of England.
Is the premier league the best football league in the world?
Hmm! That is a big question that I want you 'steemitites' to debate on.
Based on results, Spanish clubs have dominated European club competitions in the past decade. Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League in 2009, 2011 and 2015 while Real Madrid won it in 2014,2016 and 2017.
Sevilla won the Europa League three times in a row (2014,2015 and 2016) after Atletico Madrid were successful in 2010 and 2012.
When was the last time a premier league club won the Champions league?
Answer: 2012
What about the Europa League?
Answer: 2017
Two European cups in 6 years is obviously a reflection of the strength of English clubs. A league that prides itself as the most followed in the world should be ding better, especially when you look at the billions of pounds that is being shared in terms of TV rights.
In the same period, the FIFA best players in the world and Europe have come from Spain, while the big stars of the EPL have moved to Spain. Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Luka Modric would have added more quality to the premier league if they were still playing there.
No wonder Phillipe Coutinho is also trying to dump Liverpool for the Catalan giants.
The Spanish teams have spent less than €500m while English clubs have surpassed the €1bn mark in terms of summer transfer fees.
Can you predict how far English clubs will go in the European competitions this season?
I don't see an English team winning a trophy in Europe this year despite the fact that Barcelona have lost Neymar to PSG while some of their midfielders are currently struggling.
It's time for the English FA to introduce winter break so that their players don't burn out before January of 2018.
I also think PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich will challenge the Spanish clubs for European glory in the 2017/2018 season.
Let the action continue........ Enjoy the new season.
