Increasing India's GDP by introducing economic reforms was his greatest contribustion.

He introduced the Fiscal Responsibility Act to reduce the fiscal deficit and boost public-sector savings.
His works on privatisation were also awesome. He formed a separate disinvestment ministry. Giving rise to private business in India, Privatisation reduced the government's involvement in the industrial sector.

The introduction of revenue-sharing model of New Telecom Policy made telecom firms to get away with fixed license fees.The BSNL was created separately to head over the policies and services of the government.International telephone service VSNL was closed.To develope the telecom sector, he started the Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal

For the first time in India elementary education became free for children aged 6-14 years during his tenure.
Launched in 2001, it brought a drastic reduction in the number of dropouts rate by 60 %.

He invited Pakistan President Musharraf to India for the Agra summit to discuss cross-border terrorism and Kashmir.
Vajpayee gave a green signal to road connectivity between India and Pakistan with the inauguration of historic Delhi-Lahore Bus in 1999. India improved its trade and reduced territorial disputes with China.
In 2000, he invited former US President Bill Clinton, improving the bilateral ties after the Cold War.

Technological advancement during his period:
India became a Nuclear weapon state in his tenure. In 1998, India conducted five nuclear tests in one week
"We have the capacity for a big bomb now. Ours will never be weapons of aggression," he said.

The Golden Quadrilateral and the PM Gram Sadak Yojna were the road projects started by his government.
The Golden Quadrilateral made transportation easy, connecting metropolitan cities -- Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai -- through a network of highways
PM Gram Sadak Yojna connected distant villages across the country with a network of all-weather roads.
On India's 56th Independence Day speech , he said, "Our country is now ready to fly high in the field of science. I am pleased to announce that India will send her own spacecraft to the moon by 2008. This was his approval to Chandrayaan Mission of ISRO.
