Freedom from Selfishness

Freedom from selfishness comes at a price. We must pay a high price, for such a small gift. But how do we rid ourselves of such a thing?

When we study the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, the last half tells us the how of it: O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

In order to remove this selfishness and see this selfishness within us, we must be willing to see it. We must be willing to acknowledge that we are selfish beings, needing change. We must be willing to understand our selfishness.

As a Hindu proverb reads, "Selfishness is like a burning fire, it consumes everything in its path, leaving only ashes."

Peace & love to all
