5- Minute Freewrite - The Lonely Memory - Topic: Coconut
Hello Fellow Freewriters!
It has been a while since I have stopped in, taking a much needed break from steemit to focus on the outline for my novel. I am back though, in need of the freewrite to get those gears in my brain all lubed up. Let's get the idea machine moving in full force.
I found freewrite one day among one of the users that participates. He stopped by my profile to check out one of my blogs, and introduced me to the awesome community. i invite all to join in on the fun.

The Lonely Memory
I sit down on my bed, with a bright pink comforter over the lumpy mattress, staring at the coconut that sits upon my dresser next to my Collector's Edition Barbie Doll. For some reason I thought coconuts were bigger than that. How did I acquire this tropical fruit? My father, who I only see twice per year, brought it back as a souvenir after his two week long cruise to the Caribbean Islands with his new girlfriend. His new girlfriend gets the sparkle, and I get the coconut.
I start to wonder to myself, what can I do to this coconut for him to know that I am upset with my consolation prize. Smash it? Throw it away? All I really want is some quality time, not some measly memento from his big and exciting trip seeing the world. While him and his new girlfriend are living it up and enjoying the beaches, I'm stuck in 6th grade in a low-income area, low income school, eating the horrible free lunch. Yet for some reason, everyone thinks I should be thankful for my shitty coconut.
Dad says that things have to change, things have to evolve. This is just the way life is, and nothing ever stays the same. Well all I will tell you is that I wish he had the drive to show me some attention. Drive to make a substantial relationship. I know that one day he will look back at this and wish that he wouldn't have just given me a piece of fruit during one of his travels. Or maybe he will not remember this coconut at all.
Thank you so much #freewrite, you guys are awesome!
It's a sad story of yours.. Sometimes it happens that parents think that they are doing so much for their children but they are unaware of the fact that children needs love and not materialistic things...
All of my stories are sad, you will get used to it LOL. If my writing is not evoking strong emotion, then I don't want to do it! Also, I would hardly say a coconut is a materialistic item used to conjure a feeling for love. The coconut is supposed to personify the feeling of obligation as a parent that doesn't really want a child. This is illustrating how parents do the bare minimum at times, and are completely fine with it.
My characters in my stories never deserve more credit, it's OK to be mad at them. It's OK to be mad at me for painting the world so negatively. As long as you feel something, I feel fulfilled. Thank you for your generous comment!
I am stopping by your profile next to see your creation and art! Have a splendid day
Wow! Heavy piece, beautifully conveyed.
I am so not surprised that you are a novelist (although a little envious), haha. your words are clearly your paintbrush, the page is your canvas, this much is apparent!
I hope the mental lubricative process was effective and you're ready to run straight at it again :)
come join me, write a novel! I will be your cheerleader along the way!
Great freewrite. Does the characters Dad have a fancy car? I bet he does! I wonder what kind of dent a coconut makes in a fancy car when thrown from a bedroom window? ;)
awesome comment!!! You bet Dad has a fancy, shiny car!
I'm a contrarian, so I imagined a father trying to impress his girlfriend by taking a trip he couldn't afford. Then bringing back something he could afford to his daughter. Still, the gift can seem so small to a 12-year-old. And I like how you made me feel her anger. Thanks!
Anyway, keep it up. The latest prompt in the daily #Freewrite is "describe a bird": https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-168-5-minute-freewrite-wednesday-prompt-describe-a-bird
