While Raphael played the piano Candace’s mind drifted from her reading. After all, it was Uncle Enzy who proposed that Raph might have perfect pitch. Enz had been a part-time musician, part-time chef, and full-time wonder seeker.

Years prior, after restoring his father’s hi-fi and having spent several evenings sharing his vinyl collection with Candace and Raphael, he stirred a pot of spaghetti sauce in her kitchen while singing “Thin Line Between Love and Hate,” the Persuaders song covered by the Pretenders.

Raphael hummed the tune in response. Enzo repeated the chorus but was interrupted by Raphael humming at full volume.

“Nice buddy, but you’re a half step off. The song’s in the key of B, not C.”

“Hmm hmm hmm hmmmmmm mmm mmm mm mm mm,” answered Raphael shaking his moppy head of hair in disagreement with each note for emphasis.

“Dude, I’ve known that song since the 1980s, if not earlier. I didn’t bring my records today, but I can pull it up on Youtube.”

A minute later Chrissie Hynde’s soulful voice crooned out from his phone in the key of C.

“Well, I’ll be damned. Candace, I think your boy just might have perfect pitch.”

A warm, moist blast of dog breath snapped Candace back from her memory and she realized what song Raphael was playing.

She snuggled Lucie’s furry neck and began to sing along, “It’s a thin liiine...” Raphael abruptly stopped playing and squinted his eyes at her.
