Day 109: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: yard sale
Over 20 Club
Here are the invitees for this week
@wandrnrose7
@jezzle
@byn
@janine-ariane
@wonderwop
I hope you will take us up on the invitation to write a post about your freewrite journey and/or to showcase some of your favorite freewrites. Please drop a link to your posts under this prompt.
The Over 20 Club is a way to allow some of those long forgotten pieces to shine again and give the authors a way to get a bit of a payout.
Here is how it works:
I have a list of writers who have written at least 20 freewrites.
Every Monday, I will invite 5 authors to write a post showing us 3 or more freewrites they liked and are past their payout.
The writers have until Thursday evening to post their showcase post.
Several of us have committed to giving that post a 100% upvote.
Friday's prompt will have links to the showcase prompts and hopefully, many of you will give it an upvote as well.
It is up to the writers and the voters to participate - you are free to choose.
Prompt: yard sale
- Set your timer for 5 minutes
- Start writing
- Use the hashtag #freewrite
- Publish your piece (include a link to this post if you wish)
Copy and paste your URL into the comment section of the prompt post.
- Or, if you don't want to publish your freewrite, just copy and paste as a comment under the prompt post.
If you don't know what a freewrite is, here is a link to the introduction post.
Here is @snooks excellent tutorial on how to join our freewrite adventure
And @improv's input:
Two things I do a little differently. I just type "timer" into google and it pops up a 5-minute timer. I also type directly into steemit. I also rarely use a photo, don't I? So that's three things.
Please read, comment and vote (if you have voting power) on each others freewrites as much as you can. Especially if you are new to the platform, you will be surprised how many friendships are formed by reading and commenting on each other's work!
Bandwidth Problems
I know that many of you are very new to the platform and your wallets are pretty empty. Believe me, we all started there!! Here is an excellent article which explains what bandwidth is and why you might have a hard time logging in some days - or posting. Thank you @jrswab for this explanation

Great Opportunity
This is a great opportunity for those of you who are more serious about your writing and are ready to take it to the next place. The Isle of Write just announced their new project. SBD can be won and you can even make it into a print edition. Read the details here.
An update on how to enter your work.
Writing help
A free app: Grammarly. A lot of us are not native English speakers and I am finding it a helpful app. It will underline spelling and grammar mistakes. Just remember that is is not always right -especially if you use complex sentence structures. Here is the link
Remember The Most Dangerous Writing App. You set the time - 5 min - and start typing. Don’t stop!!! It will destroy what you wrote if you stop for more than 3 seconds - and backspace does not count as writing on the app. If you are prone to stop and think - this app forces you to keep going. You can make corrections after the 5 minutes are over.
A timer. Egg timer is a free tool you can use on your desktop to set a time. This is useful for our freewrites or if you want to work in blocks of time and then take a break. Here is the link
Our fellow freewriter @arbitrarykitten has a business here on Steemit. Several editors are offering to edit and format your post for a small fee. Check out their intro post
Our discord channel Isle of Write has workshop rooms for fiction, non-fiction, and poetry where some of the experienced writers might be able to give some tips. Join with this link https://discord.gg/zfXNRnK
If you are ready to get serious about improving your understanding of the English language check out @majes.tytyty blog. He has lots of useful information to understand words and their roots better. If you have questions or need help, leave a comment on his blog.
Check out @ghasemkiani if English is not your first language. He explains many idioms. Often to use those correctly is the biggest struggle when using a foreign language. He uses #idioms-tutorial
If you know of other helpful tools or people, please share with us!
Money
There are several people who offer SBD for free on this platform! How great is that!!
Here are a few
@fisheggs - follow this account and you get upvotes at random times.
@sydesjokes - he rewards his followers with SBD for any kind of interaction with him- comment, vote, resteem.
@craigcryptoking- he does a giveaway a few times a week. All you have to do is to be the first, or fourth or eight commenter. And he added a few more.
@danielsaori - he does a comment contest. A new challenge every week.
@rexusmo - I think a few of you have started to leave links to your post. Every day, he has a cheering up post. You leave a link to a post you are proud off and you might get a reward. Keep trying!!
Steemit Tools
This is the most comprehensive list of applications on this blockchain I have seen. I highly recommend that you bookmark it!! I also will include it in the growing resource section in the future. Steemit Tools
Staying Legal

Thanks for sharing today's prompt and all of the helpful resources in your post! I'm definitely going to check out a few of those writing contests! I'm excited to read the featured members' posts highlighting their favorite works as well =)
I decided to take a crack at today's prompt using The Most Dangerous Writing App. It was a bit terrifying to think I could lose my work at any moment but it really kept me in the spirit of the #freewrite! Anyways, here's my post! Let me know in the comments what you think =)
Here's mine - love you @mariannewest and @improv for bringing this to Steemit and connecting us all <3
===
Yard sales.. Sometimes that can lead to a hard sale. Like... somebody bartering for 20 minutes trying to get you down from 50p to 30p.... seems pretty pathetic really... I mean whats 20p really mean in the long run? I think more often than not it is the feeling of 'yes... I won that negotiation' that the buyer is going for over the literal physical victory of saving 20 pence.
Yard sales are called 'Car boot sales' in England. We don't have yards. But we do have car boots. In America they call them trunks - this caused confusion with one of my American friends once... and of course some laughter too.
It's great for sustainability. To go to a yard sale and buy things from other people. It means less packaging is produced. It means that less ends up in a landfill on the other side of the world somewhere. It also leads to other unexpected human interactions and sychronicities. It may also inspire you to buy something you'd never thought of buying before as you browse from one vendor to the next - you never know what you're gonna see next! It's kinda like a roullette - a gamble. Except.. luckily the stakes are pretty low at a yard sale.
Yard sales. It makes me think of chitter chatter and hustle bustle as the crowd compete to hunt for the best bargains. Cheap as chips. That's the general vibe of a yard sale. I'm really just writing rubbish now but I guess sometimes freewrites produce random ramblings often without true relevance.
If I was going to host a yard sale I would sell EVERYTHING I don't need or want in my life in the hope that it might actually go to a home that will appreciate and use the items I have neglected over the years.
This has been a boring write hasn't it? Not much of interest to say on yard sales after all.
Yard sales can be a great tool for sustainability - or for inviting hoarders to get even more :)
Good free write, my friend! Don't put yourself down!
I saw someone's freewrite and I really enjoyed it! So, he linked me here, and I decided to do my first freewrite! Thank you for the inspiration!

Welcome to the freewriters zoo! Let your creativity flow and enjoy the ride!
I love everything you do, @mariannewest You are amazing to me! Thank you for the invite for us to write about our #freewrite journey... here is my somewhat long winded (long winded??? Who? Me? Nahhhh) post about mine thus far:
5-Minute Freewrite (Yard Sale): “What Am I Doing Here?”
I looked into this box full of toys and old books, but there was nothing I could find there that interests me. I shifted my attention to the other box full of old clothes, but still I could not find anything I could bring back home.
Shit, this yard sale of my neighbor is just a ridiculous business, all his junk are trash. Nobody wants this kind of yard sale.
But I found myself there. Why? Why was I there anyway? I thought damn, I must be so bored.
I was about to leave when I found myself checking this furniture that might be fit for our living room at home. Even though it is too big to consume a space, I still sat comfortable. At least I felt that I sat on such an old couch.
Why was I there again? I do not know.
I remember I was looking for something but I could not remember what it was. But that is the point of a yard sale, right? You find anything cheap that you might want but not necessarily need. A waste of money, maybe.
There is an old clock that might be of compliment in my room. I need to keep track of my time. But nah, it’s already eyed by this weird guy who went with me about the same time.
Why was I there again?
I’m homeless. And I do not have the money. In the yard sale, it is nice to window shop. All things are used and cheap but I still walked out with nothing but a nice feeling. I just left and I want to come back already.
that was an interesting twist - being homeless...
This will be my first free write experience! I am at work right now but so excited to get home and give it my first try.
Shoot it out Davey!
Don't forget to share us the link. :)
Here is mine .. Using the bloody most dangerous writing app sometimes won't hurt me..will it?
Hello all. Thanks for the good writes. Sorry i have been unable to curate/upvote any. My bandwidth has been down, just returned now.
Hopefully i can now give my thoughts on your works. Here is mine for today.
