Christmas meaning to Society
Christmas is a traditional feast where Catholics, and Protestants, and most Orthodox Churches celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Right now it ’s holiday time in most parts of the world where people are shopping for presents, and sending greeting cards, and families get together. I call this time of the year ‘’crazy December’’ because some people are behaving like there’s no tomorrow. Shops, especially very popular shopping centers, and all the restaurants, and local pubs are crowded with people. the bigger cities especially are decorated with lights, and live concerts, with good national food, and drink. In Slovenia, we have the famous mulled wine which is quite tasty.
If I take aside that entire shopping spree that people go for, and the excessive drinking and partying, this time of the year is really lovely. Christmas is traditionally a family holiday where great presents shouldn’t matter, but love, and health, and respect, and appreciation for one another does matter.
A great deal has changed over the last decade, but one thing hasn’t. Maybe society has progressed in many ways but has also gone one step back from what is important in life. People are too preoccupied with external and material things, but when the day comes to an end we all just want love and be loved.
December in my family is not just about Christmas, but also about birthdays. My sister’s birthday is on the 5th and my mother's is on the 28th. More reasons that the family gathers and spends quality time together. Christmas Day is also the time when we have lunch and we exchange little gifts of appreciation. We don’t go overboard with gifts. Thank God!
