Virtual reality the real future of gaming or just another gimmick?

in #future8 years ago

The man dreams of virtual reality devices is not new, but recent years have brought significant advances that carry this dream of science fiction literature to the real world, especially in the context of games.

The most famous bets in the virtual reality of the branch (VR) applied to electronic games is the Oculus Rift, which is currently able to work with a reasonable amount of games, but still just a machine in the testing phase. Their own developers assume that the technology is not yet ready, but guarantee to be on the way.

The question that must be asked, however, is: is it can not pass a big mistake? That is, these equipment are in fact the next step will be or how the controls with current motion sensor generation consoles, which were presented as the way forward, but could not maintain such a prospect for long.

A matter of time

Thinking about how you saw this question a few decades ago, the virtual reality perspective might be as palpable as the flying cars, that is, only the subject of science fiction writers. Currently, however, the picture is quite different, with prototypes being created and tested, leading us to believe that a stable and affordable tool is available to everyone soon.

That's what points most experts writing in specialized vehicles around the world. The Eurogamer, for example, points to 2014 as the year of virtual reality and Spikes Oculus Rift as "the true next generation experience."

The president of Oculus VR, the company responsible for developing the gadget confirms the prediction that high end games are adapted to the RV. In an interview with Gamasutra, Brenda Iribe talks on the topic and Spikes also the changes in the industry will not occur from night to day, but They must arrive at some point.

Even the fact that this type of technology to serve beyond gaming is used by experts as an argument that yes, the RV will be part of our lives at some point in the future. Initiatives are not lacking for this to happen, of course, so it's normal that everybody only wait for the moment that this type of technology is serving us really.

On my way

Currently, the Oculus Rift supports dozens of titles, including some already established, such as Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2. None really great game is included in this list, but the interest of companies like Valve and Sony can help further boost plus the development sector.

"If the RV will be something beyond just a new 3D TV, backward compatibility is the key," said Richard Wordsworth, IGN editor, indicating that this technology should also look back. Valve believes that we should see something commercially accepted the next two years, still betting on a revolution in industry.

But it is important to note that, to avenge in fact, going beyond being just an accessory, companies that work with virtual reality to develop gadgets need to start thinking about the AAA games cited by Iribe. In short, big new releases need to be the target of these companies.

But to do so?

Who tested the prototypes already offered left impressed. Since the "simplest", as the same Rift, to the most advanced, such as Virtuix Omni, mixing glasses and a kind of electronic treadmill with which you can move around inside the virtual scenario, the impressions are from developing progress.

And in fact nobody should doubt that the idea put forward by any of these devices opens up a world of possibilities before us. It is as if suddenly we won a ticket to the world of Tron, but will the results can be truly amazing?

When we think of the latest news in a matter of control for video games, it is impossible for devices such as Nintendo Wii, PS Move and Kinect does not come to mind. The results of these gadgets, however, show that the noise made about the revolution they cause is greater than its effect in practice.

Not that the attention given to these devices has been excessive, but they have become products for specific occasions within the gambling. The Wii was a hit, but the formula seems to have been exhausted, and the controls for motion sensor point to become increasingly accessories of a niche market only.

Kinect has not yet become a de facto substitute to traditional joysticks, so accessory dispensable to the vast majority of games and players - good example is the game Fighter Within, for Xbox One, in which case a good idea ran into a poor execution .

open possibilities

If we think it is only a matter of time for a robust and competent VR system is in fact ready for the market, it is good also evaluate this "time" may take to arrive, against the more optimistic bets. None of this should be for now, as stated earlier, so much so that the same projects do not provide a forecast for their releases.

There is no doubt that other forms of controls, some in that virtual reality will have an important weight should arise in the near future, but it is also likely that such materials are expensive and become restricted - that in order to configure only accessories for specific games, like playing Just Dance on Kinect or Virtua Tennis on the Wii.

Predictions are, after all, forecasts, and more that have an effect on the market, do not always take account of the answers given by consumers when a product hits the stores. virtual reality devices already have the "imaginary" factor of the players, which can contribute at least to continue to be developed.

But there is no way to affirm that they will be (or not) the future of video games, even if we think in terms of the entire industry. An efficient equipment should impact the creation of games, the indies to blockbusters, and should only be from there that the predictions may take a little more body.

RV or VR... I'm confused now :)

This post is either old or based on old information as it seems it was written about the time when Oculus Rift DK2 was released and since then things have changed significantly. Today VR is at a much different level than it was in 2014 when the DK2 was released...

In fact the basis of the information is old, over 2014 to the present, I do not think had a change so significant as well. And honestly still I prefer the DK2. Not to mention the cost benefit.

VR still has a really high entry price for the equipment required to enjoy it too its full potential. I think AR is when we will see more of a mass adoption outside of the hardcore gaming community. Magic Leap videos are really the only thing that gets me excited to see what is coming. All the other VR devices seem still pretty early in their development.

No doubt the Magic Leap technology, is the most interesting for me, too, is another level.
