Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
Today on Lunchtime with my Gear VR I am taking a look at the new turn based RPG The Well. TurtleRock Studios has done it once again and brought another high quality title to the Gear VR platform. The Well looks and runs great and so far is really scratching my itch for a good turn based RPG on the Gear VR. The graphics look good and the gameplay is solid. There are a few things that IMHO could use some improvement however such as movement and navigation as well as the lack of voice acting past the intro. The movement in The Well is grid based and uses snap turning. This style of movement made it a bit difficult for me to navigate in the first areas of the game since I seemed to get turned around easily and lost in the passage ways which all looked very similar.
One thing that would really help with this would be to add toggle-able or persistent mini map. This simple addition would help the player guide themselves to the next objective. There is a marker that seems to be persistent but all I could seem to get from it was the distance to my next POI. All that said, since this is a turn based RPG the movement choice Turtle Rock made does seem to fit with the classic game style and after a while I did become accustom to it but of course would have loved the option for free movement and turning. I will say that I am really enjoying this game and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a solid RPG game on their Gear VR!
