A Great Game: Wolfenstein 3D

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)
Developed by Id Software and published by Apogee on May 5, 1992 to be played on PC, Wolfenstein is a pioneering game in the genre of First Person Shooter, which immerses us in a theme that was revolutionary for its time time. The context of the game puts us in the shoes of an American soldier, who is trapped in enemy territory, where the player will have to face Nazis, aggressive dogs and of course, Hitler himself, but this time the leader of the Nazis is a biomechanical being. All this from a point of view that would become the standard of video games of the genre, a delivery that would undoubtedly mark a before and after in the world of video games.

It began the decade of the 90's and the world was very far from seeing titles like Call Of Duty, Overwatch or Battlefield. The games came in the format of diskettes and the sound effects in the games were issued by an internal speaker in the pc. Already in 1992, appears a game that takes us into the story of an American spy named B.J Blazkowicz who would have to escape from a Nazi base. The fortress in which our protagonist is trapped is full of soldiers and guard dogs, in addition to this there is a large number of secret rooms that store treasures, food, medicines and different types of weapons and ammunition.

The enemies we must face are: Hitler's Superman, Hans Grosse, and then we must escape from the base in which we are trapped, known as the Wolfenstein prison. Then you must go to the underground level of Hollenhammer Castle, have killed Dr. Schabbs and have taken the plans corresponding to Operation Eisenfaust, which consists in the creation of an army of mutant soldiers who would be under the orders of the Führer. After this you must go to the Reichstag, Hitler's bunker, there to confront him and defeat him.

The game consisted of 3 episodes in its commercial launch, including the shareware (episode that contained 10 levels), also came with an expansion called "The Nocturnal Missions". Each episode of the commercial version had 10 levels, completing a total of 60 missions throughout the game.

Order of the episodes:

Original release: "Escape from Wolfenstein", "Operation: Eisenfaust", "Die, Führer, Die".

The Nocturnal Missions: "A Dark Secret", "Trail of the Madman", "Confrontation".

Each of the episodes has a boss that must be defeated, but you only have to complete 9 of the 10 missions, because in one of the first eight missions the entrance to the tenth level is hidden. The hidden level was based on one of the levels of Pac-Man, with ghosts that can be seen from the perspective of the protagonist of the game.

Wolfenstein 3D: Enemies

The violence of the game drew attention and the controversy was immediate. In Germany the distribution of the game was prohibited due to the appearance of symbols like the Nazi swastika, the appearance of Hitler, the midi of the intro "The flag in high", Nazi hymn composed by Horst Wessel and the modeling of the map showed swastikas .

Influence on the future of the First Person Shooter

After Wolfenstein massified the concept of the First Person Shooter, the ground was prepared for Doom to greatly enhance the concept of FPS, but not only Doom, but also games like Rise of The Triad, Hexen and Heretic found great benefits of Wolfenstein and the shareware business model to achieve running diskette games.

Wolfenstein and Doom served as an influence for all Shooter games that emerged from that moment to the Shooters we know today. In addition to this MachineGames with Bethesda launched on May 5, 2015, Wolfenstein The Old Blood for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
