While our patience is wearing thin waiting for the ZX Spectrum Next and the ZX Spectrum Vega+, the C64 Mini promises to be one of the better re-imagined retro PC devices to reach the market. As we anxiously await its release, here is a list of the top 5 shooters that will come preloaded on the C64 Mini.

Insects In Space

Let’s call this game an homage to Defender with two large exceptions. First, instead of controlling a spaceship, you control a shapely angel who shoots lasers out of her eyes. Second, instead of saving astronauts from alien abduction, you save plump little pink cherubs. An unusual plot to say the least but the pair does make for an arousing shooter.

Armalyte: Competition Edition

Originally to be released in 1990 as a sequel, Armalyte: Competition Edition was placed on a shelf and forgotten until now. The gameplay is outstanding and belongs among the ranks of other shooters like R-type and Blazing Lazers.

Mega Apocalypse

Mega Apocalypse is a unique shooter in that it is neither horizontal nor vertical based. Enemies and objects come from all sides as your ship appears to be hurling through interstellar space which makes this game perfect for a joystick controller. The best part of this game is the arcade perfect sounds and voices.

Zynaps

Considered to be one of the best shooters available on both the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum, Zynaps is the complete package. The playfield is highly detailed, the sound is sparse but immersive, and each level is challenging but not frustrating.

AlleyKat

With similar gameplay mechanics like those found in Zaxxon, AlleyKat is a fast paced vertical shooter where you must maneuver above, around and through ground obstacles all the while shooting land and airborne enemies.
