Matching playing style to your weapons is a great focus for this. It is also one of those things that people over look early on in a game. After they have played a while people will find they do better with certain weapons and then start using them. Which I think as you do, that this is a bit backwards.
Even on old school games like Quake CTF, you had to pick based on the way you wanted to play. If you picked a sniper and you like to run around across the open spaces, you were going to die a lot.
