3 Iconic 3D Games that did it First on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
The SNES is one of the most iconic consoles ever, but only a select few games pushed it to its absolute limit.
Before 3D games made an appearance on the SNES, the only place you would find such games were in Arcades or on PC's with there more powerful chipsets. But thanks to the Super FX processor inside this little box of dreams, it enables some of the most legendary games to appear in your homes on a console for the first time ever.
Here are 3 fully 3D games that appeared on the Super Nintendo.
3 – Stunt Race FX.
Although on the surface this game does resemble Mario Kart 64, this game could arguably be the farther of the famous 3D Mario race game.
Unlike Mario Kart 64, this game only had 3 cars to choose from, an F-type, Coupé and a 4WD monster truck. There is also 2 unlockable cars too, a 2WD and a Semi truck. This was because of the file size restrictions, being able to have several playable cars to race and a few more race tracks to race on.
Although now it may not look like much, but back then, this was the first of its kind and graphics like this wouldn't be seen again until the N64.
Despite the small playable game, it played very smoothly and was very responsive to player input. Another first for true polygonal gaming on a games console.

2 – Vortex.
This game was developed by Argonaut Games, the exact same company who designed the Super FX coprocessor for the SNES. So it makes sense that they would be the ones that developed a game that would take full advantage of there own creation.
Just like its predecessor, StarFox, this game too featured many of the same graphical assets and narrative. With one exception, the game featured not only space battles, but now had the inclusion of ground battles too with a fully animated character that you control. They took the original idea and took it to the next level, squeezing every drop of performance out of there chipset to make a game that is both enjoyable to play, and memorable one too.

1 – StarFox (aka StarWing)
When we talk about games that were true 3D for the SNES, StarFox is the first game most people think of. And there is good reason for that too.
Although 3D games have been seen in arcades and on PC's in the past, and there have been one or two, 2.5D games seen on the SNES (Doom), It was StarFox that people remember as the first True 3D game on the SNES. And it is also no surprise that it was made by the same people who introduced the first 3D accelerator chip into a games console, Argonaut Games.
Using simple geometric shapes, some cleaver background animations and awesome music, combined with a very simple story and some characters, made The most iconic game that was available for the SNES. A simple rail shooter to allow you to fly through space and across land blowing shit up and trying not to die at the same time. Although it was a very linear game, it was amazing fun to play. Just one of the many reasons why this game sold so well and why it is routed into pop culture.

There were of course a few more 3D games available for the SNES, but not as iconic or that pushed the limits of 3D graphics, as the ones in this short, but ever so sweet list.

Nintendo really pushed both the NES and SNES to the limit by adding hardware to the carts.
Completely agree :) ,
Super selection of games, I was so bad at Starfox it was embarrassing but it still did not stop me playing it all the time!

I was terrible at playing many games as a child, I'm still not good enough (I think the games are just made easier lately.) But part of the fun is asking yourself why did you lose, and try better next time. Winning isn't the only joy.
This is true Rewarding yourself for pushing further in the game is so satisfactory
Lot of the old snes games I wish they would re make for different consoles .
Great article! I always forget about Vortex.
Do you remember the toys that they brought out ? ,
What is the funny grey box? Can I play these on iPad? Panda is confused.
@blue.panda that is a snes famicon was brought out in 1992 . Download & Install siOS
Using Safari (or another web browser) on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, head to iEmulators.com, go to the Apps tab, scroll down and find SiOS, then tap on Install. You can get a number of the old console games on there , :) Hope this helps
I didn't hear about as a child, my first gaming system was a Playstation 1. After I got older and had access to internet I saw many SNES games and I thought that SNES being old, was incapable of 3D.
Your post proved me wrong, I thought I'll find some 2.5D games. But these games are true 3D, play beautifully and suit the system!!
I wish you included some screenshots rather than the game covers, as I had to search their names to look them up (But at the same time I'm grateful that this made me see gameplay videos.)
Anyway, I included this post in my Daily Picks and I'd like if you check it out.
@ahmadmanga that's lovely of you thank-you , Yeah sometimes I do not think of screen shots I am a very random person one day its modelling the next gaming and so on so I kinda become on the spot . I will be sure to add screen shots in future for you :)
You know, It's good to see Random persons on the internet because I am too and I rarely find one like me in real life.
It is true isn't it :) Not many people are alike but that is also a good thing , because if everyone was the same the world would be a very boring place to be in
So true~
