Top 5 Horror Games for Halloween Continued
Hello Fellow STEEMITS!
It has been a while since I continued this last. I am busy with school, work, and gaming! However, I will finish this list up before October 31st! Now, what game is next, hmmm...
#3 F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon)
Developers: Monolith Productions, Inc. Timegate (Timegate developed the DLC)
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Platforms: Xbox 360, PC (Steam, GoG.com)
Release Date: Oct 17th, 2005
The player plays as "Point Man". No, the character was never given a name, even in the third game when he got an actual character design. "Point Man" is part of a secret special operations groups that specializes in paranormal activities working for the U.S. government. The name of the group is called F.E.A.R (First Encounter Assault Recon). "Point Man" was assigned to the group because of his inhuman reflexes. At the beginning of the game, "Point Man" and his team are sent in to deal with a paranormal threat happening at A.T.C (Armacham Technology Corporation). A.T.C is a company that is trying to develop a clone army that can be ordered by telepathic commanders. The name of one and only telepathic commander is Paxton Fettel. Fettel has started an uprising at A.T.C headquarters with the clones. While the F.E.A.R. team tries to contain the situation it only gets worse. During this event players will learn that the everything started with a little girl named Alma Wade. Alma Wade is a extremely powerful psychic that A.T.C. abused to understand her power. The player will learn more about "Point Man", Fettel, Alma, A.T.C. and how their dark pasts link together.
The game is every linear experience. The player will basically be going down hallways or some type of corridor. This game put very little effort to incorporate any type of open world. "Point Man" will be fighting against A.T.C's own personal security army, Fettel's clones, and monstrosities conjured up from Alma. The game is a FPS. The player can hold up to three different weapons and can swap for new weapons anytime they want. The player will be able to carry different types of grenades and mines as well. Since F.E.A.R. is a older game it has some older game designs. There is no regenerating health. The player picks up health packs along the way and has to manually press a button to use it. A health pack will not be used automatically when the player reaches critical health. F.E.A.R. is praised for having some of the best A.I. in the gaming industry. When players engage in a fire fight the enemy is very quick to react to their surroundings. If the player tosses a grenade the A.I. knows to move, enemies outside the blast radius will get up and fire at the player to give that A.I. time to move to a new location. If the player stays behind cover for too long the A.I. will flush out the player with a grenade and use that opportunity to kill the player while the player is in the open. However, this can be avoided using the in-game slow mo. "Point Mans" inhuman reflexes can be activated to slow time around him. Slow mo can be used to move to new cover without being killed or killing everyone in the room with the few seconds the player is offered. Once the player exits slow mo, the bar will recharge moderately in several seconds. While not fighting live soldiers, the player will deal with evil beings. These beings are rather predictable and are nothing like the human A.I. However, during these parts of the game the atmosphere is very scary. The player will be witnessing psychological flash backs and corridors littered with blood and corpses. If you ever want to play this game, expect jump scares! I have never seen a game use as many jump-scares as this one does. I'm telling you, if you even dare sneeze during the game a jump-scare will probably happen.
Above this text is a sample of the official soundtrack. I like the soundtrack as it does provide tension and atmosphere. However, it is not my favorite soundtrack. Ambiance is a critical part of the game. Unlike newer games, when the enemy throws a grenade there is no grenade icon. The player will need to listen for a "clink", determine how loud the "clink" is to figure how close a grenade is to them. Despite the game being from 2005, the graphics managed to age pretty well.
