Backstory in Detail
Jarehn'Zho was identified by the local priestess of his underdark home city to have a great magical potential, and was taken from a young age to train in the arcane arts.
He was a successful student passing tests of both blade and wit.
However his thirst for magical learnings was great, and the scant few rituals shared as 'expansive material' did not sate his interests. Having gained an initial confidence in his abilities, he continued to push himself beyond the sylabus.
Against the express wishes of a mentor, he sought out ancient texts, depicting the sort of ritual for which his curiosity itched; it was of a kind deemed capable of bringing 'a great displeasure' from Lolth.
Sequestered in the lowest shelf, in the very dustiest restricted corner, its shabby sleeve showing only the faintest trace of a starburst, Jarehn'Zho's breath caught. This was it!
He began thumbing the pages right there, crouched amid scrolls and tomes, lights dancing across the faded pages as he hungrily devoured and memorized what he could of the forbidden lore. He began to despair of making sense of it all, until a scant few words leaped out at him, indicating a ritual, one that lent deeper understanding of text, it had an Eldritch aspect, needing only to invoke a deity.
Now understanding why the tome was so restricted, he grimly flipped through until finding the invocation in greater detail. Brushing over sigils and whispering their forms an oath began forming in his mind, lips murmured near of their own accord, a brief flash as his dancing lights were extinguished, and with a lurch the tome fell and, and by fate itself, one of the very rituals he had initially sought was displayed open to him; a spell the would allow him to see daylight for the first time.
Without hesitation he pushed back the shelf slightly to allow for better room, and began the incantation, he could feel magic flowing through his voice; however a heavy slam and several footsteps jarred him from the trance, as indeed the librarian and small group of tutors and students had caught him, hunched over, pages aglow.
His actions that day caused him expulsion, much to the disappointment of his house.
But things scarcely got better, when specific details of the tome emerged, he was pulled into a yet more formal hearing, and was ultimately deemed, exile, and worse yet, the tome sentenced to destruction by incineration lest it ever again lead one of the young astray.
In his final hours, with hopes and fears and more aglow within him, Jarehn'Zho commited a final act of defiance, pilfering a narrow volume of what would have been his later coursework, had he graduated the year.
With nothing left but rejection, and his once proud scimitar, he scrambled the heights making a break away from the city lest they set the hounds on him.
In the caverns he though ever of that ancient tome, destroyed by his actions, its sigils danced before his mind's eye, and feverishly he resolved to preserve what contents he could.
Nightly did he scratch and sketch from memory page after page, often in a language he knew not, but his recollection proved true, until at last after many tendays fled from the city he had transcribed as far as he could. He looked down upon the partially complete daylight ritual. His mind would go no further.
He closed the volume, resolving to go further and to see more, if I can't incant it, I shall see it for myself!
With resolution he began to climb ever higher, closer to that star burst that would make his eyes and new-found identify sing as one!
Eventually, after a brief run in with an injured underdark denizen (where he made good use of his new found curative abilities), Jarehn'Zho eventually having evaded all pursuit, made it to the surface world. With an undying wonder he continually explores the surface, keeping track of settlements, and potential underdark entrances.
He often tries to join smaller groups of travelers perhaps, gradually learning the ways of folk, and is quick to try to give aid to the injured or sickly. Though he understands people have great reservations towards his ilk, for he shares the same reservations now, he yet hopes to one day gain for himself a reputable name and a place to find acceptance.
