HEADLANDER - Watch your head ®

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

Headlander is a futuristic metroidvania game with a 2.5D side scrolling presentation, set in a distant future where humans evolved, completely surrendering to technology and an AI being called "Metuzelah" that allowed them to digitize their brains and live forever in robotic bodies. At the very beginning of the game , the player slips into the role of the last man who hasn't completed this transition, but unfortunately all that is left of him is the head that is being kept alive by advanced technology.

Fortunately , this mechanism also allows the head to fly and attach to the compatible slots that are located not only in the machinery that governs the world of new mechanized people , but also on the necks of different robot units (of civilian models as well as workers and military units which are equipped with weapons ).

All zones are full of color , retro sci-fi design and audio backgrounds which will fill the hearts of gamers with nostalgia. Visual experience is also increased by the fact that the game is not located in a serious environment.

All these tourist zones are perfectly designed, the humor comes out of everyone's mouth, although most of the game is set at locations around the areas where only robot patrols and workers are allowed.

Flying represents a unique part of the game, giving the opportunity not only for an interesting approach to combat sequences, but also light a logic puzzle, which will require from the player to avoid lasers when flying, or for more complex navigation in time challenges. The battles are very fast and brutal , initially due to getting used to the control system and two separate control modes, and later because of the large number of opponents who will cover the entire screen with laser fire.

 - It's advisable to reduce the number of opponents during battles using robotic arms, then the remaining opponents won't pose a threat and can easily be disabled using the flying head . Simply approach the opponent and pull out his head from his shoulders with the "vacuum" . When you get the hang of this most of the battles won't be a problem, as long as the air space is relatively clean from the opponent's fire.

The improvement system of the main character is something that every metroidvania must have in itself. In Headlander this is solved through a system of collecting XP points. The newly unlocked abilities aren't reduced to enhancement of the combat-defense readiness,  there's also a couple of advanced capabilities that will allow the player to visit zones of the map to which he previously had no access.

Although the introduction to the game and the initial exploration space station is really interesting, soon after that it  starts to show its true face . Not the face of bad games though, but games that simply don't have enough ideas to make the entire campaign interesting .

The navigation through the story is resolved with an easy-quest system, which are, unfortunately, a bit too easy. The locations of current tasks are clearly marked on the map.
