Learning the art of pokemon battling - part 2

in #gaming7 years ago

Hello and welcome to the part 2 of my pokemon series! I hope you enjoy, and if you do make sure to show your support :)

In Pokemon battling, the main goal is to defeat all of your opponent's 6 (or less) Pokemon. To achieve this, you have to bring their Pokemon's health points down to zero. Each Pokemon has 4 move slots you can fill with any move that Pokemon can learn, each move falls into one of 3 categories: special, physical and status. Special moves do damage based on the user's special attack stat, physical moves do damage based on the user's attack stat (it's normally called physical attack, but technically it's just called attack), and status moves which don't do damage directly, but have an effect on the user's, or target's side of the field or Pokemon.

How do I find a Pokemon's stats?
To find a Pokemon's stats you can go on https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/teambuilder and search for the Pokemon you want, or search every Pokemon based on stat totals.

What are all the stats, and what do they do?
Below are 3 different Pokemon each with different roles, I'll explain what each of them does, and how the stats make them able to do their job.

These are the stats of the Pokemon "Chansey", Chansey is normally used as a specially defensive tank due to it's high hp, high special defense. What this means, is that it's used to take hits from Pokemon using special moves. Typically it does damage using status moves, or moves that do a set amount of damage because of its low physical and special attack.
rhyperior.png
These are the stats of Rhyperior. Rhyperior is usually used as a bulky sweeper or tank, because of its high attack, defense, and hp, but low speed. I've already explained what a tank is, but I haven't explained what a "sweeper" is. A sweeper is a Pokemon used for taking out your opponent's team, typically using moves that deal damage based on the user's attack, or special attack stat, rather than fixed damage moves. Some sweepers take advantage of items, while others use status moves to raise their attack, special attack or speed.
volcarona.PNG
These are the stats of Volcarona. Volcarona is typically used as a fast special attacking sweeper, using choice items, or the move quiver dance. Quiver dance raises the user's special attack, special defense and speed, making it harder to take out using special attacks, faster, and more powerful.

As you can tell stats can play a very important role in pokemon battling. If a pokemon doesn’t have the right stats for its role, it’s likely not a good fit for that role.
