I Came Across A New Term - The Leisure Economy

in #gaming7 years ago

We are currently living in the era of the attention economy. It is a big market, much bigger than you might think. Think of it as what gets shown on the front page of a social media site or what streaming service you pick. People are competing for eyeballs and there is only so much space to showcase your work. This also includes the ads that get seen at the top of a Google search and people pay a lot to have their links pop up. And it an be worth the cost, you are getting traffic passively. This is one of the strongest assets of steemit as it gives value to the coin. The more you have the more attention you can get and thus there is a reason to buy and hold it.

This economy is only getting more intense as new sites try to make a place for themselves. But it is not the only new economy that is emerging. The leisure economy is getting paid to do something you like and in the case of a possible future it is going to be gaming. If a game is popular enough and there is enough of a progression in game that people can earn items and sell them (and the game is popular enough) then yes, in theory, you could have a leisure economy.

In order for this to work you would need items that are rare and levels that take time to beat. This would make them valuable and people who want to cut back on time can just buy the items instead of grinding. Why would they want to do that? So they could compete online or be able to grind for better equipment right away. It might sound silly to some but it is already a real thing and with crypto it can be a lot more mainstream.

These are the new economies that our world is entering, do you think we are going to see a massive change in how we see work? I am okay with a lot of jobs not being jobs but I hope we don't lose our sense of work and charity.

Oh nice!
I'm not doing nothing I'm working hard to build leisure economy!

Hopefully it is more along the lines I am taking which is income diversification and stress reduction. Having only one stream of income and not enough money to live the life you want for your family are problems in my mind. Diversification helps with that and is good for the mindset.

I don't envision replacing my other businesses with my steemit business for example. I do envision it being one of a number of things I can do during the day to help others and make a bit of money to buy personal freedom. This Leisure economy may just add a couple new ongoing opportunities for a couple bucks while having a bit of fun.

Plus my kids haven't become gamers for nothing!! :)

Lol it was part of their education.

I can see that, which is still to have. There is also a lot of discussion of us living in a freelance future.

The empowerment of the united Geeks!

lol there are a lot of us.

Actually I see us moving to this type of economy.
You can already stream on twitch and get paid for playing games and just talking to people.
This will continue to grow as the younger generation matures and the older generation dies off.

If we could take all the data about ourselves that FB and others collect and sell, and we get the money instead of them.... well we would be that much closer to a leisure economy.

I would love to see an economy were the next Mozart never has to work or attend school just produce music and the blockchain makes sure he gets paid and all his bills are paid so he can just make music. That is my crypto utopia.

Would love to see it work for games also. On that note I am trying to get a D&D gaming online on steem to test out this leisure economy concept. The posting is in my feed.

Off to work :(

you guys enjoy the day.

Twitch is great.

I think that is a possible income, some kind of basic economy.

Cool I will check it out, I always wanted to play, it was one of those things I never did.

You as well :)

Interesting to think of it as a leisure economy. Though I think if you get to a point where everything is passive and you aren't having to grind anymore then you are losing a bit of meaning and purpose, as you eluded to. That's not to say that we should only be doing work that is a grind and lacks joy, but the ideal is to find a good tension between something you love to do, yet perpetually challenges you to grow. That's not quite as difficult as trying to find the end of the rainbow, but it's close ;)
Thank you for your thoughts on this - upvoted

I do think we are about to see a huge change or shift in what is considered work. I think this is more likely to come feom automation though. Automatiom is going to force people into jobs that require higher skill. A lot of people look at this pessimistically and i disagree. We should all hope for a world that fosters education in a skill set. It can only be good thag more people decide to learn more and strive to so something hard and rewarding.

The Leisure Economy posits profound economic changes in North America due to both the retirement of the baby boomers and the attitudes of ascendant generations X and Y. Looking at trends in demographics, economics and generational change, a book hqs been published at how to stay ahead of the leisure economy and predicts who will be the winners and losers in the seismic shift ahead...

Yes I think new economies are entering our world, they are struggling a lot but they will succeed.Over decades, blockchain technology has been undergoing the hassle of legal procedures to prove being a real solution for developing business surroundings. Despite an onslaught of criticism, a blockchain-based digital ecosystem has successfully disrupted traditional banking and financial system bypassing third parties and bringing benefits of seamless international transactions via a transparent online ledger that everyone can keep track of.
