RAFT: Ocean survival manual, you have nowhere to run + video.

in #gaming6 years ago

If you are a fan of survival games, where every minute counts to determine if you will live for the next night I bring you a new game that I got. But in this game you won't be on an island, or in a forest, because you'll be in the middle of the ocean on four wooden boards and with a lever tied to a rope so you can drag whatever material you can get along the way.

Getting food, fishing and turning salt water into drinking water will not be the only challenges of the game, because a shark will be present that will try to kill you every time you enter the water. But if you don't get in the water to try to avoid the shark, he'll destroy your boat by biting it (although you can't call 4 boards floating in the water a boat).

The game starts without an introduction, you will simply be in the middle of the ocean, on top of floating boards and in your hand a plastic lever attached to a rope.

On the screen you will see 3 bars on the lower left side representing your character's health status. You must be alert so that it stays alive, if any of the three is altered, your character's vision and movements will be affected.

The lever with the rope will be your first and most important tool during the start of the game because you won't have any resources to start with, but as the ocean waves push your boat, you can get materials and debris floating around.

You have to measure the distance to throw the lever in the direction the material is floating, because the rope does not have much range and entering the water is not recommended because there are sharks. The basic materials to find are wood, plastic and palm leaves.

On some occasions you can get wooden barrels, which are important because sometimes they have other special materials inside, food or scrap metal that we can use to create new tools. Try to be accurate when throwing the plastic lever, because it wears away and you could run out of materials to create another one, risking having to go into the water with the sharks.

Now that you have the basic materials to create new tools, what you have to do is create things that allow you to hydrate and feed yourself, so that you can continue to survive.

Humans cannot consume sea water, because it causes dehydration.

drinking seawater to maintain hydration is counterproductive; more water must be excreted to eliminate the salt (via urine) than the amount of water obtained from the seawater itself. Human consumption

water

I don't know if this method is real, but don't forget that it's a game.

In this image on the right side, I show how the distillation system processes salt water into water for human consumption.

Wood is used as fuel to generate fire, which gives heat to the container containing salt water. The salt water evaporates, leaving the salt in the container and the water rises as steam to the palm leaf above.

The vapour is then condensed into liquid, which falls down the stem of the palm leaf to the container on the right. And there is stored drinking water for the human being, the method takes a while to make but it will keep you hydrated.

It's time to get some food.

The next step will be to create a fishing rod, to catch fish from the sea, which will be the only animals you can eat or find in the game. The shark won't react at any time and won't change its attitude while you're fishing, so don't panic at the thought of pulling the rod.

It's important to look for food quickly because your character loses energy depending on what you do and their movements are affected if they are hungry.

water

When you get your first fish, don't hesitate to eat it raw because your character is probably hungry and will start to lose energy. Don't worry that you won't get sick from eating raw fish, the game only shows that raw food gives you fewer calories than when it's cooked.

Something I find contradictory because raw meat actually provides more nutrients than when it is cooked. The fish meat must be cooked to kill microorganisms, to avoid diseases, to soften the meat and to give it a better taste ( I imagine they do it because as it is more complicated to cook food, you will have to cook it for more energy.)

At the beginning of the manual I mentioned a lot that there would be a shark that would be attacking you, but I didn't lie when I said it, only that you would die first of hunger and thirst before dying because of the shark. Unless at the start of the game, you jump in the water like an idiot.

If you thought that the game was only difficult because you had to keep your character fed, then you were wrong, because in the whole game there will be a shark stalking you at every moment. Not only will it attack you if you go into the water, it will also destroy your boat in parts every now and then.

At the moment the only way to defend yourself is to use a wooden lance, which is not a very sharp weapon, but allows you to hurt the shark and prevent it from destroying your boat. It sounds like a simple job, but when you're trying to get food, produce water and in such a small space, I can assure you that the shark will be a huge nuisance and a constant threat.

When you make the "wooden hammer" tool, you can begin to create wood and plastic structures that will allow you to expand or repair your boat. As I mentioned at the beginning it is very important to collect the wooden barrels that float in the water because they contain a lot of materials and it saves us time to keep building things.

Once you have enough materials you will have to create a wooden grill to cook the food. This is for cooking potatoes, onions, fish, but at first you will only use it to cook fish that will be as easy to get.

This grill only needs wood to be used as fuel and to keep the fire burning while cooking. It will be very important because in the game the cooked foods give more energy and save you time, which you can use to continue collecting materials or fishing.

Land in sight, Captain.

The boat is carried away by the waves and the wind, it means that you will not have dominion over it. I'm sure you'll be tempted to want to go, to have more space and to cut down trees, but I suggest you don't go until you start creating tools to control the boat because you might lose sight of it and risk being attacked by the shark while trying to go to the island.

water

Better tools and equipment

It's time to create a workbench that will allow you to make plans for the construction of special tools or survival equipment.

To achieve this you need more materials that are more difficult to get, but to achieve it will allow you to work more efficiently. In addition to being more resistant equipment, like the plastic lever that you can turn it into a metal one that has more durability than the previous one.

Don't forget that in the middle of this whole process you will be attacked by the shark, I just don't want to mention it every moment, but if you are playing you can understand how frustrating it is to be constantly harassed (Play it and you'll end up hating sharks, I know it's a game, but it pissed me off the whole game).

While you are sailing you will encounter small abandoned boats, these are important because they have chests, barrels or containers with materials inside. I recommend to get to them quickly but you won't be able to stay on top of them for long, because they sink as soon as you get on them.

The waves of the sea and the vierto will be your only engine to navigate, so you will have to use it to your advantage. The red flag tied to a mast will let you know the direction of the wind, so you can use the sail and control the direction in which you want to go without risking leaving the boat.

water

Single use anchor

You will use this to stop your boat at any time, but you can only use it once, because when you throw it in the water it cannot be picked up again. It means you'll have to create another one to stop the ship again.

It will be very important to have one ready, because when you are near an island and want to go, you must stop the boat to prevent the wind and the waves from taking it away.

I leave you with a video showing you everything I explain in the survival manual, so that you can appreciate all the above in an audio-visual way.

I find the game very entertaining and although it only has one rival who is the shark that attacks us constantly and is present at every moment, it has something that surpasses any survival game, because you don't find yourself on an island, or in a forest, you start floating on four wooden boards with only a plastic lever tied to a rope to drag everything you get in your way.

Such a small space is something that makes you desperate, because you don't have the option to go anywhere, everything you have to do is limited to that space that the game gives you at the beginning. Plus you'll be forced to act fast because your character will start to feel hungry and thirsty.

The game is not created for users who make very slow decisions or react in a desperate way, I said it because I played it four times in order to understand the dynamics of the game and not die in the attempt. I ended up hating the shark because it attacks when you are busy or when your character is weak from hunger and thirst.

I only show the basics to survive the first days, there are more things to create that you can see in the video, but to avoid making the publication too long I will create another one where I will show a manual of more advanced things.

The game still has a lot of things to add, because it's not finished yet. And I do not want to tell you the story, but I will just say that the world is no longer as it used to be'.

Man that looks like some hardcore survival game right there. I can’t believe you have sit there and try one piece at time of supplies to drag it in with a hook. This game looks like it gives the players some punishment. Between that sharks, and them trying lure you in with “easy” looking land. This game could have quite a cult following.

They seem to have really thought things out and did not want cave in to today’s norms of easy and everyone wins style of game play.

Gosh this looks really tempting with the crafting system. My weakness. They seem to have really thought that out decently as well in the design and possibly how it works in the real world as well.

Hahahaha yes, my friend, the game is created to generate despair. The shark killed me on several occasions trying to find materials in the water, on other occasions I die of hunger or dehydration.

It gets very complicated because there's not enough room and you're alone in the middle of nowhere. (I hate that shark)

A barbarian getting killed by a shark—blasphemy!

I'm never a fan of sharks in games. I forget if it was Stranded Deep where a shark kept trying kill me and was just playing mind games with me every time I tried to do anything. Evil things.

Hahaha yes, unfortunately, I only have one plastic stick. But in the next issue you'll see the video where I'm hunting the shark.

I use to love living off a raft in Ark till they added in things that could destroy them.

Those sharks seem to really love your boat. Nice to see how it evolved at the end as you gave us a cut screen to more advanced teasing of the future.

hahahaha yes, soon I will show you the most advanced manual, there are many things to create, but I feel that it would not all fit in one publication.
