What is Apex Legends and why is it so popular lately?

Apex Legends has been out for less than a week and it seems like everyone is playing it. Is it a fad or the next big thing?
Well 1st lets talk about what it is. Apex Legends is a battle Royale game where many players parachute into an arena in hopes of killing all the other players with weapons found around the island. However the game also takes some gameplay elements from another popular online game known as Overwatch in forcing teamwork/groups and having specific characters with classes and abilities. Apex Legends forces people to work in groups of 3 and characters fall into classes such as healer, scout, tank, and damage. Items looted also fall into several categories, from light weapons, heavy weapons, armor, medkits, weapon augmentations such as scopes and grips that tweak weapon stats, etc. Though the game only has 8 characters and 1 map currently, it shows a lot of promise. The map includes a ship flying around that can only be boarded if you drop onto it. There is also a system where you can pick up fallen members' battle tags to revive them at respawn stations. Having ultimate abilities that charge up over time to deliver dangerous fire rains or weapon supply drops makes the battle royale gameplay feel more eventful.

To be fair, Apex Legends did not do anything particularly unseen before, but took the best elements from some of todays most popular games and put them all in 1 game. With lots of customizables to obtain like character skins, weapon skins, profile, finishing moves, etc. There is a lot of small customizables to work towards in the game (not just from buying a battle-pass with real money like most battle royale games, though the game will feature this system as well starting in March of 2019). Personally I enjoy what I have seen and played of the game and am excited not only to see where it goes, but also the effect it has on other online games such as Overwatch and the battle royale compretition.
