The pumpkin that left Spain to conquer the world.

in #garden4 years ago

I did a little experiment in my garden last year. In Spain/Valencia I got to know a pumpkin variety that is mainly baked in the oven and served as dessert.
Unfortunately this variety needs a lot of good weather, but with the global warming I thought...

it'll work out. So last year I ordered a few seeds of "calabaza totanera" in Spain via internet.

As you can see it worked, what you cannot see is that it was anything but normal.

I planted them at the end of March or rather raised them indoor. After it had a good size sometime towards the end of April the plant emigrated outside.

It bloomed and grew very quickly and vigorously with both female and male flowers. Several fruit sprouted over 2 months, but most of them withered away immediately.
But there was a persistent fruit, it grew and grew and grew into a beautiful size.

The time passed, towards the middle of November I got nervous, it had the size and weight of a healthy and mature fruit, but it was completely green.
So I harvested it with a heavy heart and placed it decoratively in my kitchen.

There he stood and looked good. He stood even longer and after about 3 months in February he started to show slowly but clearly pale orange spots.

Now we have April and what he looks like, can be seen here.

It has taken on a healthy colour, it is still very heavy, no rotten or other dubious spots, and sounds hollow like a pumpkin that is mature when you knock on it.

This is the big moment, what does the pumpkin look like from the inside?

He looks damn good! That's a lot more than I expected.

So let's get to work to make what is perhaps the first "Calabaza asada valenciana" that was both raised and prepared in Germany.

After 1 hour oven time the following result was to be seen.

This looks as good and original as in Valencia

If you are not allowed to travel, just bring the world to your home. It is especially worthwhile in this case. Therefore ...

quickly cover a remaining seed with soil and moisten it.

I am already looking forward to next year :)))
