AUSTRALIAN NATIVE VIOLET
Morning steemers,
Thought Id do a little post on one of my favourite native ground covers:- NATIVE VIOLET. Not only is it a food source for both Humans and many Animals it acts as a living mulch, keeping moisture in the soil while protecting the soil from the harsh Australian sun.
Viola hederacea (Native violet) with a sneaky Argyreia nervosa (Hawaiian Baby Woodrose) poking its way through to catch some sun.
V. hederacea is a plant utilised by many native Animals and is a great addition to ANY garden here in Australia. In Brisbane you have to keep the watering up to establish it (as with most plants) and it will tolerate filtered light to a fairly sunny position once established. Get some in the ground and also check out Viola banksii ;-)
Happy gardening,
Sam
