How to care for YOUR Amaryllis bulbs
Amaryllis bulbs are classified by size, which is determined by measuring around the outside of the bulb at its widest point. Make sure it is heavy and firm, not moldy or squishy. It should have some fairly long fleshy roots attached.
Amaryllis can be purchased at any stage of their development, for me the real fun is growing the plant from a bulb. Most amaryllis bulbs are sold already potted. Once watering is started, you can expect magnificent trumpet-shaped blooms of red, pink, white, or orange in four to six weeks. Each one usually produces 2 or more flower spikes. Each spike will produce 2 to 4 large trumpet-shaped blossoms.
After flowering, grow the amaryllis as a foliage plant until the leaves turn yellow. Then store the potted bulb on its side in a cool, dark room or basement to rest for eight to ten weeks. When new growth appears, re-pot the bulb and return it to the light to start the cycle again. Once your plants are back on track, display them away from drafts in a bright room, but not in direct sunlight. They prefer 60° to 70°F temperatures and like moist but not soggy soil.
