Wanna be gardener - replanting tomato plants 🍅🍅

in #gardening8 years ago

Sunday was such a lovely day for photo's, glorious sunshine, healthy bright green tomato plants, then I came and ripped them from their cosy home, pulled them apart and scattered them around.

Well, something like that. I have a bit of a shortage of space, let's look how I got around that, giving my tomato plants a bit more room to breathe.

Tools required

First you need a drilling machine, drill bits and cable ties.

...

Yes, really, you will see where these came in soon. I would like to say no plants were harmed in the making of this post, but I am pretty clumsy when it comes to green stuff, so that would just be lying!

Making space

As you can see, the poor tomato plants had grown so nice and big, that they had run out of space in the planter that I had originally put the seeds into. The balcony does have a bit more space.

I had set up stacked planters, in an earlier post, Me.. gardening!?! Well sort of 😉, but in that configuration they would not work well for tomato plants. Something had to be done.

I decided to disassemble the tower and rather have the planters along the edge of the balcony next to the rail.
It gets a bit windy some days, so they would need to be fastened somehow, to prevent them from being blown off.

Using the drilling machine I drilled two holes on each corner of a side of the planter.

This allowed me to loop a cable tie through the holes, then around one of the rails on the balcony.

Here you can see the back side of the planter. Nice and tight, these planters are staying put in the fiercest of winds!

At about this point, my tomato plants were becoming sentient, fearing their fate, they made an attempt at suicide off the edge of the balcony, but I caught them out, as evidenced by this photo... 😉

Almost done

Here you can see the layout, much more space is available for the tomato plants to grow vertically.

I also stopped taking photos here for some reason, so there is nothing available of me actually re-planting. I will however do an update showing the status of the plants soon.

Do you know nothing about gardening? Don't worry, neither do I. That has not stopped me from trying and posting about it though.

Your tiny balcony looks really cozy now :)

It does! I can't wait for the tomato plants to grow some more. It is going to be so lush!

Nice gardening! I like the way you create the small space for planting! I look forward to seeing photos of more photos of the tomato plants with much interest!

p.s. I also have little flower garden in front of my house. I love to see them growing up!
