Buillding a Guest Cottage Next to the Food Forest

My husband and I started building our food forest 7 years ago. It started with two raised beds and two people who didn't know what we were doing. We did not start gardening with a vision of building a food forest. We took out time observing the land. I ordered a bunch of gardening books and started reading them. We also visited farms and homesteads around us to learn everything we could possibly learn.

We live in a small town where lots of tourists visit each year. We often have visiting guests who ask to tour our food forest. It's sad to realize there are so many adults and kids who do not know how food grows. It makes me happy to see the excitement on their faces when they spot cucumbers or melons growing in the food forest. It is also wonderful to see the smiles on people's faces when they taste a homegrown tomato for the first time.

Fast forward to today. We decided to build a small guest cottage on our property that we can rent out nightly to guests who want to visit the area and also see our food forest. I will also be sharing what I have learned so far with our guests who are interested in growing food themselves. We are also planning on digging a pond right in front of the cottage and stocking it with fish for our future guests. I know the frog music will be insanely loud and peaceful bouncing off the surface of the fresh water.

We broke ground on May 15th, 2019. The concrete truck came the next day to pour the footing. It was so weird to see this tall orange thing in the background sticking up above the orchard area. It was massive.

We are excited about this project. I will be documenting the entire building process here on Steemit. Stay tuned. We will be doing the block work next.

this looks EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! such a great idea...to build a cottage to share with others the magic of the food forest! "if you build it....they will COME!" :))))) can't wait to see the upcoming posts! :))

Thank you!! Keep sharing your food forest please. I am learning all kinds of stuff from your posts.

thelaundrylady, won't ask questions but why? :-) thegreenlady, therawutahlady, thedhobiwhala, thesteemmonsterwidow, so many choices..

easy....because I am the lady who does the laundry lol.

it's funny how it seems to disturb me. I would 100% accept something like theonetakingcareofthechildren and i honestly think woman should recognise that as part of their nature but doing the laundry, nah nah :-) I like rawutah's new tag #idomyownlaundry.

haha, there is a story behind it. I promise my husband is not a pig and he actually does more of our personal laundry than I do for free. I charge and people pay when I do laundry because I am an "expert". People don't come to me unless they have laundry that they can't figure out how to clean. I am like a laundry whisperer. A hot commodity in our small town :-)

Great, now we're talking, this makes sense, now i will leave you alone in peace with your beautiful lush green surroundings, have a wonderful weekend, much love.

Omg, TheLaundryWhisperer, i like that one!

It's funny I have been on Steemit for more than a year and you are the only one who has ever asked me about the name. I should have named myself TheLaundryWhisperer!

lol...she's not my wife bro. just an epic food forester ....on the steem blockchain. ;)

lol. If I had a food forest like @rawutah, I probably would never leave the property!

:-) straight shots, right or wrong doesn't matter, that's how i find out things :-)

So this is not in Pakistan?

lol...nope not in pakistan that i know of...but i haven't seen her reveal her exact location either. i dig your style...on and off the battlefield bro. cheers! - signed #idomyownlaundry :)

I am in Southeastern Oklahoma.... definitely not Pakistan :-)

I laughed so hard and ended up spitting my water out when I read your "- signed #idomyownlaundry ".

great tag. Since exactly 10months i can say #idomyownlaundrybutihaveawashingmachine, it changed my life as i have been doing the #washthewashablenappiesbyhand kind of thing :-)

You are in Pakistan, no? If you're close to Indian border, i might drop in one day...

Wow! I did not know anything about your food forest before, do you have a series of previous post about the subject?

Yes, if you look at my past posts, Most of them are all about my food forest.

Great, I will add them to my to-do list 🙂 As soon as I can afford it, I will invest in a peace of land to start growing my own food. I am certain that I will go first after tropical fruits, their deliciousness is far beyond what I can express with words alone 😛
