"We learn from failure, not from success." ~ Bram Stoker

How nice that you made it to this Daily Field Note! It is already the 164th edition where we put great posts from the last day(s) in the spotlight. This way you can easily find articles worth reading and authors get more of the exposure they deserve.

Geopolis is a community that promotes and connects people who are interested in fields of "global" sciences. These are the sciences that deal with planet earth and the interesting interactions taking place on it. Although just as fascinating, they do not always fit in the categories of "STEM". Here at Geopolis they are the corner stone of the community.

How to get your post in this selection? You do not have to be a member for your post to get featured in the Daily Field Notes. Just write your post with the #geopolis tag, or one of the other featured tags: #Geography - #Geology - #Ecology - #Archeology - #Anthropology - #History

Geography: How does the Coriolis force determine the spin of a cyclone?

Original post by @aximot

What force determines the spin of a cyclone? This question cannot be answered correctly, without referring to the "Coriolis force", mentioned by and named after Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis (1792-1843). It was already derived correctly from Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1775 from the Newton's laws of motion, but Coriolis published it and focused on it in a publication in 1835. Because of the highlighting of the force, it was named after Coriolis.

It has an impact on bodies in motion in a a rotating frame of reference and it is a fictious force. It is always perpendicular to the velocity and the axis of rotation and proportional to the mass of the object and the rotation rate. Comparing the force at two latitudes, the result shows that the force increases with decreasing distance to the geographical poles.

Geology: Mineral Mondays #31 - Bacon Opal!

Original post by @rt395

Bacon Opal is a unique stone, the combination of wavy white, pinks & reds gives it the appearance of bacon when cut. I've been trying to get my hands on some for about 1 year now and finally was able to acquire some large pieces of rough last weekend.

Bacon Opal, also known as Candy Opal, is a hyalite opal. Hyalite opal is a colorless version of common opal, but due to inclusions of hematite and other minerals from this location the hyalite opal in bacon opal is red, yellow, white, pink and shades between those colors.

Original post by @ravenruis

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Executing Louis XVI, King of France 'Portrait of Louis XVI of France', by Antoine-François Callet Rightly or wrongly, the decision was made to execute Louis Capet, which was carried out on the 21st of January 1793, in front of a crowd which had once hated the King, but had since grown to pity him and his fate. The decision as to whether or not to put Louis XVI, King of France, on trial for crimes against his country was a matter of great and passionate debate for the members of the Convention. From the time of his arrest in August of 1792 until his trial before the Convention in December that year, the advantages and disadvantages were both debated...
