The darkest movies on Netflix (Top 10)
VERONICA
When “Veronica” premiered on Netflix, it was said to be so scary people couldn’t finish watching it. This teenage girl besieging an evil supernatural force will surely make you scared of Ouija boards again. The horror film even impressed critics, and holds an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
TEETH
A teenage girl finds out the hard way that she’s the living example of the vagina dentata myth. Thanks to a crazy story and some bits of comedy thrown in, this disturbing film did well with audiences and even critics. It’s horribly graphic though and probably not something you want to watch with Grandma. Or your sister. Or anyone really.
THE INVITATION
“The Invitation” was hailed by critics for its intense sense of dread as tension at an awkward dinner party rises. You can tell something is horribly wrong, but are left guessing what it could be, and how they can escape.
CUBE
In this dark sci-fi thriller, several strangers wake up in a maze of cubes, some of which are booby-trapped to kill. The New York Times described this 1997 Canadian film as “surprisingly gripping, in the best ‘Twilight Zone’ tradition”.
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE II
This film may be incredibly well known, but if you’re like me you’ve spent years avoiding it. After finally watching it this year though, my suspicions were confirmed: it is by far the darkest “Human Centipede” in the trilogy. This is probably because the kidnapper has no real medical training and disgustingly butchers his 12-person centipede. Just thinking about the laxatives he injects into his “centipede” is enough to make you lose your dinner. I assume the goal of the film was to be disgustingly disturbing though, in which case they greatly succeeded.
GERALD’S GAME
The Netflix original movie “Gerald’s Game” might’ve been overlooked because you were focusing on Stephen King’s bigger adaptation “IT” last year. However, it’s a dark film worth watching. It’s suspenseful from the start and stays there, with a particularly horrible hard-to-watch scene. You’ll know it when you see it.

RAW
As Justine begins veterinary school, she enters a seductive and disturbing world she wasn’t ready for. After being forced to eat raw meat for the first time, she discovers some dark cannibalistic behavior. As you might expect, the film’s incredibly intense and obviously gross at times. It holds a strong score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, so as long as you have an empty stomach when you watch, you’re sure to enjoy it.
THE VOID
“The Void” did well with both critics and audiences, but you need to be a fan of old-school horror films to really appreciate its weirdness. While trapped in a hospital that acts as a gateway to hell, the cast gets brutalized. There’s also everything from crazy cults to the undead. As a critic for Empire movies put it, it may not be for everyone “but gorehounds will love it. Don’t a void.”
