My Female Role Models who nailed it: women’s status in science
Hello, everybody!
Almost everyone has a role model in their life. A role model is hard to define, as it can be not the same for everyone. Who your role model is extremely depends as much on you as it does on the person you look on with favour. Often, it is someone you would like to be like when you get older, or someone who does something you find difficult to accomplish.
Today I would like to introduce you two of my female role models.
MARIAM MIRZAKHANI, 'math genius'
MARIAM MIRZAKHANI, 'math genius'
Maryam was an Iranian, a woman and an immigrant to the United States.
Maryam Mirzakhani was a mathematician and a professor of mathematics at Stanford University.
Her research topics included the following :
- Teichmüller theory
- hyperbolic geometry
- ergodic theory
- symplectic geometry
On 13 August 2014, Mirzakhani was honored with the prestigious Fields Medal .
She became the first woman to be honored with the award.
The award committee cited her work in "the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces".
Maryam Mirzakhani is a role model for more than just her mathematics. Maryam’s contributions to the field of mathematics will long be remembered.
Mirzakhan, one of the most eminent mathematicians in recent year, lived a short life. On 14 July 2017, Mirzakhani died of breast cancer at the age of 40.
