Google Buckles, Puts in Pedals and Steering Wheel in Autonomous Car

in #google8 years ago (edited)

Google broke the internet a while ago when they revealed their self-driving car concept. The video showed people getting into a car fitted with LIDAR (among many other sensors) and... that was it. No controls for the driver --no driver, actually-- and no pedals. The car did everything itself. EVERYTHING. Reception was positive and anxious, with most people really looking forward to the first ever fully autonomous vehicle.
San Fransisco government stepped in, though. Putting their foot down, SF government officials say that every car that is equipped to be on the road must have a steering wheel and pedals, regardless of its ability to operate without input.
Google, rather than wait for legislation catch up to the times and the technology, bit the bullet and decided to install the user controls in order to bring the vehicle to market more quickly.
The good thing is that the car will still be autonomous, but will now have more in common with Tesla's "Autopilot" function than an autonomobile (which is what all us nerds have wanted for oh, so long) and with the latest development of Uber's self-driving car program apparently being illegal (they failed to file appropriate paperwork for their self-driving car program in San Fransisco), we may be seeing "Google Taxi" cars popping around California.
