Google and Cisco partner on hybrid solution for maximizing cloud and container efforts
On Wednesday, Google and Cisco announced a new hybrid cloud solution to help customers improve agility and security with an open platform for developing and managing applications both on premises and in Google Cloud.
The fully supported solution will develop, run, secure, and monitor workloads, according to a blog post from Nan Boden, head of global technology partners at Google Cloud. This will allow users to "optimize their existing investments, plan their cloud migration at their own pace and avoid lock in," Boden wrote. It will also give developers the ability to create new applications in the cloud or on premises using the same tools, run time, and production environment, Boden noted.
"This joint solution from Google and Cisco facilitates an easy and incremental approach to tapping the benefits of the Cloud. This is what we hear customers asking for," said Diane Greene, CEO of Google Cloud, in a Cisco press release.
The hybrid solution will allow developers to take advantage of managed Kubernetes, Google Cloud Platform Service Catalog, Cisco networking and security, and Istio authentication and service mesh monitoring, according to the release.
It includes policy-based Kubernetes orchestration and management across hybrid environments, security, real-time network and application performance monitoring and automation, and joint technical support. The solution also offers a hyperconverged platform that supports existing apps and cloud-native Kubernetes environments, along with a uniform way to connect, secure, manage, and monitor microservices with Istio.
Legacy on-premise workloads can connect to the cloud through Google's Apigee API management platform, while Cisco's DevNet Developer Center offers tools for enterprise developers to begin coding in hybrid setups.
The hybrid venture addresses operational problems that enterprises have struggled with in the past, Boden wrote. With it, enterprise app developers will be able to access cloud APIs, while cloud developers will be able to access enterprise APIs and on-premises resources, with top security measures in place.
The new Cisco-Google solution will be available to a limited number of customers in the first part of 2018, and will be generally available later in the year.
"Our partnership with Google gives our customers the very best cloud has to offer—agility and scale, coupled with enterprise-class security and support," said Chuck Robbins, CEO of Cisco, in the release. "We share a common vision of a hybrid cloud world that delivers the speed of innovation in an open and secure environment to bring the right solutions to our customers."
The solution may be especially helpful to enterprises as adoption of hybrid cloud continues to grow, according to a recent study from SUSE. Some 66% of organizations expect this hybrid cloud expansion to continue, compared to 55% for private cloud and 36% for public cloud.
