Potential Lesson to be Learned

in #government5 years ago

Sometimes you can get such strong feelings about a situation that you don't think straight. Your thought processes get so tied up in your emotions it seems like those irrational thoughts are the best solution. It's probably happened to all of us at some point in our lives. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will. When it does and the irrational cloud of your emotions clears away, you will probably find before you the most powerful lessons on humility you have ever experienced. The key is to take that lesson on humility to heart and learn from it.

Liberals are setting themselves up for this situation. I want to stress liberals here and not lump all democrats into this group, because many democrats are more moderate and wouldn't be considered liberals. The liberals however have an extreme hatred for Donald Trump that is clouding their judgement. Maybe hatred isn't exactly the right word but pick a synonym such as dislike, distaste, resentment, aversion, hostility, or loathing. Any would fit.

This feeling among liberals seems to have resulted in a huge move of their policies to the left and is dragging the Democratic party with them. As a result, the leftist or socialistic ideas of Bernie Sanders, which were considered extreme during the 2016 election, now appear to be commonplace among the 2020 Democratic candidates. At the same time, the candidate probably with the best policies to give a chance for victory in 2020 is getting hammered by liberals and their partners in the media. Joe Biden may have the best policies of the candidates but unfortunately he also suffers from a chronic case of "foot in mouth" disease.

Trump won the election because of the electoral college with Hillary winning the popular vote. The anger of liberals has not only increased towards Trump but also the electoral college. The war cry against the electoral college is the undemocratic nature of the institution and it shouldn't exist in our "democracy". This statement is right and wrong, it is undemocratic but we don't live in a democracy. Still, The National Popular Vote effort underway would align states electors with who ever wins the popular vote. According to their website, 16 jurisdiction totaling 196 of the 270 electors needed to become president. These states include California, Colorado, Conneticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The electors for these areas all went to Clinton in the 2016 election.

Liberals are letting their emotions cloud their thinking in this area. The lesson in humility could come if Trump won the popular vote in 2020 and would be handed one of the largest landslide victories in U.S. history. Just imagine, the most hated and vilified presidents in history gets handed a landslide victory that comes as a result of the emotional knee jerk reactions of those that hate and vilify him the most. I can't imagine the number of recounts, investigations and/or lawsuits that would be generated to prove Trump's second term was illegitimate.

Luckily for liberals they will be saved this lesson in humility. The National Popular Vote program doesn't go into effect until they have enough states on board to have the 270 electors to elect someone as president. It won't happen in 2020 since there is little chance enough states will join up by then (if ever) to put the popular vote program into action. It's not going to happen, but I still get a laugh of seeing the potential and thinking of the humor coming from watching liberals react to not only his second term as president but also having the distinction of holding one of the most lopsided wins in history.
