Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion - Greece
These are a few photos from my visit to Cape Sounion a few years ago. Sunsets here are one of the must beautiful that you can see 🙂 . Here, the ancient temple of Poseidon dominates imposingly.
If the Athenians with the Parthenon honoured Athena, one of the two claimants of the city's naming, in Sounio, they dedicated the temple to the second claimant, Poseidon.
The temple could not have been built in a better place than this. A rock 60 meters above sea level, which watches over the boats passing from Athens through the Aegean Sea.
It is the same rock, where a variation of the myth, tells that the King Aegeus was standing there waiting for his son Theseus to return from Crete. Theseus forgot to hoist the white sail, and when Aegeus saw the ship with black sails in the distance, he thought hes son had been slain trying to kill the Minotaur , and jumped into the sea, which has since taken his name, Aegean.
Great photos. Its Just amazing. Thanks for sharing.
