Interesting finds at the latest gun show

in #gunshow7 years ago

Greetings, people of steemit! Welcome to my blog!

We went to a local gun show yesterday afternoon, Friday, it's always interesting to see what's on the tables at a gun show. There's always a lot of different guns at a gun show, but there's always a bunch of other related things, and not so related things at a gun show as well. With some shows, it can be a lot like a flea market of other stuff as well, which always makes it interesting.

I wasn't interested in buying another gun at the show, I was looking for other stuff, such as ammunition or reloading dies. Sometimes you can find a bargain at a gun show. With some types of obsolete or surplus ammo, a gun show may be the only place you can find it without ordering from an internet source and paying a premium price plus shipping. Also, as an obsolete cartridge collector, a gun show is probably the only place where I'm going to find something to add to my collection.

So, lets take a look at what we came home with this time.

I found a box of .38 long colt ammunition for my cowboy revolver, an antique 12 gauge reloading tool, a red fox skull, a heavy steel target, and an interesting bayonet that I haven't seen before.

Here's the steel target. It comes with a pair of hangers that fit over a steel T post. You can use rope or chain to hang it, but chain holds up better if you accidentally shoot it. These targets are cut from 3/8ths inch steel with a CNC plasma torch, according to the person we bought it from.

This bayonet is pretty interesting, it's the first double edged bayonet that I've seen. It has a Mauser type mounting system, but According to what we could find out about it on the internet last night, It is a post WW2 bayonet, issued with the FN-49 semi auto rifle.

This is an antique 12 gauge shotshell reloading tool, used for rolling the crimp into place on the mouth of paper shells. It's pretty simple to use, and it clamps onto a workbench. I don't plan on actually using it, but I thought it was pretty cool.

This next item was a pure impulse buy...the red fox skull. It has been sprayed with a clear cote to protect the bone from deteriorating, and the lower jaw was glued to the upper to keep it together. It's an interesting decor piece.

The last item is the box of .38 long colt ammunition. This is new loaded ammo from Ultramax, a company that specializes in "cowboy" type ammo. These cartridges are loaded in brass made by Starline, a maker of reloadable brass cases for hard to find ammo.

The 38 long colt was first produced as a black powder cartridge in the late 1800s, and chambered in several different Colt revolvers. It's not quite as powerful as the .38 special, but it has more power than the .38 Smith & Wesson cartridge also originally a black powder cartridge. The .38 S&W is actually a bit larger in diameter than the .38 long colt and the .38 special, and won't fit in the chamber of a .38 special revolver, where the .38 long colt will fit into the chamber of any .38 special or .357 magnum. The .38 long colt is the same diameter, but slightly shorter than the .38 special, which is shorter than the .357 magnum. Here's a picture which shows the different cartridges so you can see the different lengths. The .38 Smith & Wesson is the shortest one, and the .38 long colt is the next one. Then, 4 of the .38 specials, and 3 of the .357 mag cartridges.

That's the end of this post, I hope you found it interesting!
