Story of a Hack

So I just lost $ 11,194.82 in BET tokens that I had purchased from the dao.casino ICO. Not sure about the point of this writing other than maybe theraputic after just loosing so much money. This may calm myself down and help others to avoid similar thefts.

The hacker got my private keys through a fake link posted in the slack.

I clicked the link before noticing it was a fake site. I guess you could say I was careless and deserved to get it stolen, but I just didn’t think of it as a possibility. It was after I had clicked the link and tried to log in using my private key that I realized it was a fake link. At this point I knew someone had gotten my private keys, but didn’t know what to do about it. The ICO coins were already purchased with that account. The only way to stop it was to beat the hacker too them. Then unfortunately the Parity wallet hack took place which interrupted the ICO. The white hats had moved to the funds and the ICO was shut down. So now I couldn’t even tell when the end of the ICO was coming. I kept checking the site to see if it was over, but no date was given. When I checked on the 27th the ICO was finally finished but when I went to look at my wallet, the funds were not there. Checking ethplore.io I could see the funds had been deposited and then removed before I had a chance to do anything about it.

So that was my experience that I’m working through and trying to recover from. Hope maybe this helps someone else or at least reminds you to be extra careful when clicking links.
