in solitudine

cadono, ritrovandosi

i fiori del pruno

en solead

se caen, encontrándose

las flores de ciruela

in solitude

they fall, finding themselves

the plum blossoms

Welcome to the forty-eighth edition of Mizu No Oto, which will take place in both Spanish and English!

It is a difficult time for us here in Italy.
The Covid-19 virus is hitting the world violently, leaving China and spreading west.
Our country was one of the first to fully understand the scope of this epidemic, also thanks to one of the best public health systems in the world, and has taken drastic measures to contain the infection.

A sequence of Prime Ministerial decrees has progressively restricted travel, closed schools, nonessential business activities, and restricted the freedom to leave.
We live confined to the house.
The only stores open are supermarkets and pharmacies, where only a few people can enter at a time. All others must wait in line, respecting the minimum distance of one meter between person and person.
Many companies have placed their employees on forced vacations or have established telecommuting.
We can only go out with self-certifications attesting job needs, mandatory health needs, or essential shopping for living.
Hospital intensive care beds are crowded, temporary and field hospitals have been established. Health workers are often subject to extraordinary change, and retired doctors and nurses have even been called back into service.

People try to maintain an appearance of normality, unfortunately someone defies the decrees and the risk of a criminal complaint (or worse, contagion) by being caught by the urban police outside their municipality of residence without a valid reason.

We spend our days at home, or on the shortest trip between home and work, spending our free time cleaning, cooking, reading, watching movies, playing with children, watching friends on video calls ... someone organizes flash mobs in the balconies or through the open windows, where each one sings or plays an instrument, with more or less pleasant results for the neighbors.

The funny thing is to see that the other countries gradually move from making fun of us, or even accusing us of having brought the virus to Europe, to adopt measures that are completely similar to ours, but less effective due to inferior health services.
I am not a particularly patriotic person, but I think that when this is all over, I will remember very well who insulted us.

I apologize for dropping this rant, but I wanted to introduce the subject of the photos in this edition.
I decided to put three. Choose the one that seems to touch the strings of your soul the most.

Do you want to know how we evaluate the submitted haiku? These are the characteristics we search for:

• Kigo (季語), an explicit or implicit reference to a season, that defines the time of the year in which the haiku is composed or referred to.

• Sabi (寂), the sense of the inexorable passage of time, the beauty or serenity that accompanies the advance of age, when the life of the objects and its impermanence are highlighted by patina and wear or by any visible repairs.

• Wabi (侘寂), the taste for frugal and natural things, rustic simplicity, freshness or silence; it can be applied to both natural and artificial objects, or even non-ostentatious elegance.

• Mono no aware (物の哀れ), empathy with nature and human life; the "feeling of things", nostalgia, regret for the passing of time, understanding of the changeability and of the transience without suffering.

• Yūgen (幽玄), sense of wonder and mystery; it represents the state of mind produced by the inexplicable fascination of things, the feeling of an 'other' universe, full of mysterious unity.

• Karumi (軽み), beauty in simplicity; poetic beauty reflected in its simplicity, free from preconceptions and moral judgment.

• Shiori (しおり), gentleness; the levity and the delicate charm that radiates from the verses, where things are evoked in the reader without aggressiveness or excessive explicitness.

Good haiku to everybody, and remember the posting/voting deadline: seven days from this post publication!

Haiku lovers, special greetings in these times of planetary quarantine.
Let us do like the flowers of the field when the strong wind passes: clinging to its little piece of land, it bends a little and waits.

Gracias por el amable pensamiento! Me gusta mucho tu metáfora!

I haven't heard anyone blame the Italians although I wonder why it started in Italy. You have 5G in North Italy already?

Most blame the Chinese since the plagues always start there even the one in Medieval time acvording to a teacher.

Some say it's made in.a lab by the Chinese, most say the USA did it to blame the Chinese.

It there's anyone or anything to blame it is overpopulation + lack of hygiene + travelers + christians/religious people. Look at the situation in Iran, look at the Netherlands it's most where Carnaval was celebrated.

Perhaps my kid is right if people ignore are too stupid they do not deserve to live. In the Netherlands the minister wants us to get sick and build an immune system against it. 70+ is no longer welcome and we have only 1200 beds and perhaps 2k. It says enough. We are overcrowded, don't care and life goes on (so are school examens). 💕

I seldom see children play outside these days. After school it's homework, dinner at 6 pm and bedtime.
We have a garden so can go outside like we used. No neighbors just us and the wolves 😁

Well, it was mostly Germany, Austria, Slovenia and France that started to close borders and claiming the first European contagion was Italian, but do you want to know the truth?
The first infected was a German man, who for work traveled from Wuhan area in China to Germany, to Northern Italy. He infected a lot of people back in January, but the Germans did not realize it, because they began to make tampons long after we Italians. This is why it seems that the European epidemic started here: we were the first to notice it, thanks to our extraordinary doctors and a system that fortunately is not yet too disastrous!

To be honest I think the virus is way longer here as Januar or December.
Hungary has closed borders, Belgium came one day later and the Dutch... I doubt it's closed at all. Tomorrow at 3 pm my daughter has an interview at a shop (kind of drugstore).
Most countries lie if it comes to this illness and ignored it as long as posdible.

No worries no one hates the Italians Dutch people love to go over there. You have the bigbproblem with all those migrants and tourists. Good the borders are closed and time to send them back.

Stay safe and ignore the news. We all hear something different and if it comes to it we are more busy with us, our own lazy governments as with those of other countries. At least yours is doing a better job as ours. Way better.
Stay safe and take good care of yourself. 💕

I sincerely appreciate this post because the responsibility must begin with ourselves. Relief is important but the most important thing is to make the problem public with words of encouragement. A big hug from Venezuela.

Muchas gracias!

Fraternal greetings to lovers of haiku, in these times of world quarantine. The world needs answers to the question of why they didn't stop it earlier. Having this story told from the first source from your country is encouraging, the strength that exists within the human being to help and survive is inexhaustible. The photographs you share are a testimony of what is happening and at the same time a reflection of what is going to affect all of us, because we believe that we are immune to all this tragedy.
