Reading haiku takes little time...evaluate haiku takes more time...writing a haiku takes even more time, but writing or reading a narrative story takes even more, for me.
Haiku are not simple! The guidelines for the contest are only a super-semplified top of the iceberg. And if you think you've few syllables, just imagine in Japanese, or Italian, or Spanish, 17 syllables are even less, because words are average longer than in English. Several American and Japanese-American scholars think that English haiku should be 3/5/3, and I try to respect this metric when I translate mine to English.
A couple of days ago I posted some haiku of mine about wintertime, and they're mostly 3/5/3, except one.
