DIY - how to create your own hardware wallet

in #hardware7 years ago

Hello steemians,

I would like to share my thoughts on securing wallets.

I recently read an article with nice info ( https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@inviter/protecting-your-investments-online-and-offline-storage#@sravankcm/re-inviter-protecting-your-investments-online-and-offline-storage-20170617t144418585z)

The above article covers most of the options out there but I think we could achieve similar results as a hardware wallet on regular flash drives.

Option 1
BitLocker
This is applicable only for Windows OS.
Windows has built-in functionality to encrypt files/folders/flash drives.
Bit Lockers is the name of the software and all one wold have to do is right click on a flash drive and choose encrypt device
Here is an article that goes over it. (https://www.howtogeek.com/192894/how-to-set-up-bitlocker-encryption-on-windows/)

Option 2
VeraCrypt - Price - free
This is a software that can be installed on all popular Operating Systems.
VeraCrypt is a cousin of previously popular TrueCrypt. Also provides hidden drives and operating systems.

Both of the above options can be used to secure any regular flash drives.
If you are a person that has a bunch of Desktop Wallets and passwords this could be very useful for you.
You can store all the "wallet backup files" or wallets files themselves at one spot.

I do think self-encrypting a flash drive has advantages
doesn't cost cost anything
you are in full control of the encryption
not limited to few coin types.

What do you guys think ?

Thanks man, good tips, I have just joined and i post about travel if you would like to follow me :) Also i have a free giveaway on my post

I like the idea but a ledger or trezor or other option is more convenient I think, and maybe a little more secure. If there is some kind of open source project for an all-in-one wallet meant to be run from an encrypted thumb drive that would be awesome! I know this is an old post but I'm actually searching for a solution like what I mentioned.
