Parenting and Diabetes type 1 what you need to know.
Hello Steemit.
I am heleni rossidou and this is my lovely boy Nicolas.
This is my first post after my introduce your self I am here to blog mostly on the parenting section and share my concerns of my daily life with people we share same interests. I will start with a sort brief of what is diabetes type 1 and how can you diagnose it at early stages of your kids life. I hope you will never have to though. Let's start.
Diabetes Type 1: what is it?
It is an autoimmune disease, so you better stop telling your selves you are not worthy parents. This has nothing to do with what you did, nothing you can do to prevent this or cure it at the time being. It is like a lottery. At some point the immune system gets confused and starts attacking those cells responsible to create insulin to our bodies. Why? No one can tell.
Insulin: Is a hormone that is produced on pancreas, it helps to distribute sugars towards our tissues. Cells use it as a fuel to produce energy. With out insulin in our bodies the sugar doesn't move into the cells as it should, instead it builds up in our blood and as a result to that the cells “starve”, the blood sugar goes high therefore constantly high blood sugar leads to a number of complications:
- Weight
- loss
- Fatigue and weakeness
- Blurred vision
- Hunger
- Constant urination
- Constant thurst
- Irritability
If the diagnosis comes late or not at all there are more severe symptoms to be taken into account such as
Dehydration of the constant urination Ketoacidosis (DKA) The cells are short in sugars and they start braking down fat cells instead, this process creates chemicals called Ketones. The liver releases the sugar it stores to help out. But the body can't use it without insulin so it constantly builds up and the blood, along with the acidic ketones. This combination of extra sugar dehydration and acid build ups is known as “Ketoacidosis” and can be life-threatening if not treated properly. The body will eventually fell into a comma and the patient will have a not much of a chance to survive.
On my next post I will talk to you about my own personal story and experiences I collect with my little boy Nicolas and our struggle. My blog will be clearly supportive and informative towards parents that are facing the same problems. And waiting to be parents as to things they will need to be alarmed of.
Below there is a list with sugar and gluten free products that I highly suggest since my little boy loves them, food is very important when it comes to quality of life either you are healthy or not. Just something to consider.
To be continued...

The sugar industry and all food producers who include sugar in their products have a lot to answer for. We have to educate people not to be deceived by the lie that 'a little bit of sugar makes the world go around' or makes food taste a little 'nicer' And we also need to be aware of poisonous sugar substitutes as well. The best solution is to re-educate our tastebuds. So that little bit of organic raw honey makes a nice treat.
Wonderful to see the care you have been and are giving to Nicolas, Heleni.
Welcome girl. Kiss me your boy. :D
diabetes in childhood is usually followed by a struggle between parents and children. This relationship has a high influence on long term success of preventing secondary repercussions. Acceptance of a life with diabetes is the first and most important step.
Thanks for sharing.
Acceptance is the first part but as a parent you have to make sure you are raising within your child self awareness.
He has you so your both going to be fine. I wish you both all the best
Thank you so much!!
