What happens to your body when you quit smoking?
The outcome of smoking is damage to the heart, lungs, cervix, blood vessels and other body structures
The effect of smoking can be reversed after several years of quitting smoking. The health milestone you achieve after quitting smoking include:
1 hour: Nicotine withdrawal symptoms begin as soon as four hours after the last cigarette. These symptoms include fatigue, headache, dry mouth , depression, anxiety. Withdrawal symptoms may peak 48 hours after you quit smoking.
8 hours: Partial pressure of oxygen in the blood increase while carbon monoxide level drops.
48 hours : Withdrawal symptoms peaks
1-2 weeks : Craving increases
1-3 month: Withdrawal symptoms stops.
Energy improves
Breathing improves
Lungs regeneration starts. The cilia in the airways regain their function.
Cough disappear or may become less hacking.
1 year : The risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker.
5-15 years: Stroke risk, lung cancer and cervical cancer is reduced to that of a non- smoker.
After 15 years: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of one who never smoked. The body is then recovering and healing.
