This is my nightmare scenario for the coming decade.
One of these times, a human host for avian flu will pick up a mutation that makes for efficient spread between humans. We'll be faced with a global pandemic that resembled the spread of COVID...but with 10%, 20%, or higher fatality rates, including young healthy people. And we're not doing much to limit human exposure, and we're still selling raw milk. It's like we're trying to bring it on.
But since we learned so much from COVID, we'll shut down indoor bars/restaurants, we'll mask up, and we'll quickly take the excellent vaccines when they're ready...and maybe get out lucky with just 10 million dead Americans.
I have no doubt that Asia and AU/NZ will handle it well. I have hope that much of Europe could salvage a decent showing. I have no doubt that our do-your-own-researchers will make an absolute mess of it here. God forbid it happens when RFK is in charge of the response.
