Being a family is all about loving each other unconditionally and wanting to help one another. A good way to provide what’s best for your family is by encouraging a good healthy lifestyle for the whole household. A healthy family is a happy family! Being healthy doesn’t have to be a chore but rather a fun alternative to bad health habits.

A good first step towards a healthy family is changing up the family menu. A healthy diet consists of a plate half of fruits and vegetables, a fourth of a plate of protein, and the last fourth of whole grains. Milk and dairy products should be limited to 1-2 servings a day, preferably marked as low fat to reduce calories and saturated fats. Water should be the main form of hydration in your household and any tea or coffee should be taken with a little sugar as possible. You can decide on the new family menu together and have fun cooking together in the kitchen. Old recipes can be updated by using healthy alternatives to previous ingredients allowing you to keep old family favorites. It is best to slowly change all your meals into a healthy updated version so that any little ones are not shocked by the change. Providing your family healthy food choices will ensure they have vitamins and minerals throughout their day.

The new healthy menu will give your family the energy to get out of the house and play. Your family can grow closer to each by playing sports and other active games together.Playing sports as a family can encourage your children to play as they get older and stay active. Any sport games can be broken down into its basic elements to make it easier for the whole family to play. Any sport you play can help your child discovery their favorite and be encouraged to join teams in school. You can toss each other footballs, shoot hoops with a basketball, pass soccer balls or play a game of catch with baseballs. Your family can still have fun even during stormy weather with inside games. An old classic game is hide-and-go-seek, it is easy to play and every family member can have a turn at being “it”. Another fun activity is dancing; you can make a game of it by seeing who can make up the silliest dance move. Dancing can be a game with older children too by playing on any number of dancing video games available. Most of these games are just as active as regular dancing but give dance moves to popular music. Being active as a family will help you grow closer and have fun together.

Being physically fit has been proven to improve self-esteem and decrease chances of depression. Spending time together as a family allows your family to bond over games and meals.
