6 tips to ACTUALLY fall asleep at night!

in #health7 years ago

After years and years of struggling with going to sleep, I decided to go deep into reading and changing my lifestyle to see if I could get over this difficulty, and it worked!. I'll give on this text the tips that work for me instead of generic stuff you see everywhere so check it out.

1. Get off your phone! Goddamn!

Don't do this
I guess everyone knows this one at this point, but I have to say it because it's SO important. Instead of complaining about technology I'll just: the strong light from on your phone keeps your brain activity high. Now you're thinking about all the times you fell asleep with your phones in your hands to go against my argument, so I'll just remind you of all mornings you fell asleep at class in the morning, or afternoon naps... Being bright doesn't mean you can not sleep, it means it's harder, obviously at some point you're way too fatigued and it overcomes the discomfort, however why spend 2 hours waiting for that instead of just putting that thing away?

2. Not only get off your phone but get it off you. Seriously. Like at least 3 steps away

Don't do this too. If it's harder you won't do it

If you use the 3 steps away rule, you're less likely of going back to it if you can't sleep at first or wake up in the middle of the night. Also, pro-tip: have a water bottle closer to you than your phone.

3. Cooler your room

This is an interesting one. Even for people who live in hot countries (like me), our body is used to having cold nights, since our ancestors had a bunch of them through thousands of years. So,that makes it easier to fall asleep with a slightly colder temperature, especially if it contrasts the day.

4. If possible, sleep with your window open
If it won't rain, snow, or get your room full of bugs (or thieves), sleep with your window open. The air outside is different from inside your house, especially on the composition and temperature. Your body knows the difference and it kinda gives you a feeling of comfort.

5. Read a boring book
This one works 100% of the times. If you have or know a boring book you have to get over with, read it before bed. Actually, for years I had a boring book close to my bed JUST for sleeping, wasn't even my interest to read it. Watch out! If you choose something you need for your class YOU HAVE TO read it in other times, I'm saying that not to tell you to study, but rather your brain might start to associate that book with sleeping, so if you need it later, you gonna have a problem. So, I would say just pick something completely different and it will work fine.

6. Create a ritual
This one also works for by association, something our brain really likes. Select couple things you like to do before bed and just roll with it every day, having a crazy routine definitely is not easy to maintain. For me it's rather simple, but works: contrast shower (ending on hot water), brushing my teeth, putting my dogs and kitten to sleep, changing my bed sheets if necessary, charging my phone on the other side of the room (with the alarm on the loudest possible) and handling my boring book!

Bonus tip: sleep on the floor

Easy peasy, where do you think our ancestors slept for more than 80% of the human journey on Earth? Yup, on the floor. I said it before it's good for posture but it's also amazing for getting some deep quality sleep. Don't need to touch the floor, you lie on top of couple sheets and have your pillows of course, especially if you like sleeping on your back or sides. Just make sure your room is clean, C'mon...
